Back in the summer I got fitted for a Cobra fly z+ driver on Trackman.

The fitter ensured me I was carrying the ball 20 yards further and most importantly spinning the ball much less than my old X2 hot. We couldn't really see the ball land so I took the guys word for it and parted with my £329. All summer on the rock hard fairways I've been hitting it like a dream, then the fairways got wet and it goes nowhere!

I was then recently lucky enough to have a lesson on Trackman with one of the world top coaches, three swings later he says "why did you buy this driver and not get fitted" I was I replied. "Sorry son, that's the worse fitting I've ever seen"

needless to say im bloody fuming and stuck with a club I can't even sell at a £200 loss. It's not a bad club it's just not right for me.

Anyone else got stitched up at a demo day?

To be honest I feel a bit the same way but then I guess you have to take into account everyone is trying to sell equipment. I got some mizzy 850 forged irons at a fitting and came out with the x100 shaft to help with my quick tempo and transition.

I have gone from Wilson di7 with a uniflex shaft with a 6 iron swing speed of 93mph so there was my problem. I went to see a local guy about changing a shaft in my driver and he took a look at my irons and said what are you doing with these?? Were you fitted etc?? Anyway he reckons the fitters were lazy giving me that shaft but I did try 3 or 4 different ones and preferred the feel of the x100 so that's all that matters.

Seems strange to hear you say that you've been hitting it like a dream, and then because someone says different it's suddenly the worst ever.

So what was/is actually wrong with the fitting?

I tried the Titleist AP2 714's in the KBS X stiff shaft. The measurement of carry went up from 180 in my own club to 200+ in the CF'd club.
I spoke to my club pro to ask if he believed the increased figures (which I didn't), and he didn't. He thought that perhaps they removed all the spin just to get the ball in the air for a long time, looks good on the range and on the fitting equipment, but is no use on the course.
I will go for a try of the 716's when they are out, but with the club pro there to check the numbers to see if the spin rates etc are correct/sensible.

I was hitting it well and getting loads of run on hard fairways, the problem was the carry. It's 20 yards less in the air, now the ground is wet I'm miles shorter, swapped back to Callaway and all my distance is back through carry.

The fitter had given me a heavier and shorter shaft to get my spin down but lost me 9mph on club head speed, this was not mentioned at the time but showed up on the independent lesson on the Trackman. All the info was there for me to see this time rather than hidden on the iPad I couldn't see at the fitting.

A good fitting would have got my spin down and kept my club head speed.

Funny you should say this. My friend was fitted for an R1 when they first came out, waiting a couple of weeks for delivery, when he got it, he hooked the life out of everything, he plays off 5 so he knows how to hit a ball. He went back to TM and they didn't want to know so he was stuck with it.

I'm also not convinced that Callaway fitted me correctly for the Big Bertha I won on here last year, when I got that through I couldn't hit it for love nor money, everything, and I mean everything, went low and right. Tried tweaking the settings, nothing helped, Callaway then sent me through a different shaft, which helped a bit but in the end I had no choice but to move it on as it was killing my game.

I used to play off 5, and as a result of hooking the life out of everything I'm now off 6.
Nothing to do with my club however!

Didn't they show you the carry figures on screen for your old club and the Fly Z at the fitting? Surely if you are parting with over 300 notes you'd want to see the evidence?

I went for a fitting this year and I tried various new drivers and I could not hit any of them further than my existing 5 year old one. So the fitter said I may as well stay with what I've got, which I'd expect any half decent fitter to say.

Lol, he went back to his other driver and was fine. He was gutted as he'd been waiting ages for the R1. Hooked and fell out of the air rapidly apparently. Mind you, easy to make excuses.

He read all the info rather than showing it to me. My mistake really, but I was expecting better from the fitter.

My Callaway shaft in Cobra head seems the best option at the moment.

I have. It's a speed issue. I can't get the speed because of the shaft length and weight.
An inch more length and 10grams lighter I would be about as good as I could be.

Interesting. I had a pretty similar experience.

I was set up by Cobra's team to reduce spin from a steep out to in slice. I came away with Fly Z +, weight forward, 10 degree draw setting and a 75g Aldila Tour Green Stiff shaft (which is pretty heavy for me). Was pretty happy with it but a lot of my distance was run.

Have worked on flattening out my angle of attack a little since it was fitted. Since doing this I couldn't get the ball airborne enough and have had to tweak it to 11.5, no draw, weight back. Now distance is pretty similar to my previous setup but again, a lot of this is run.

When tweaking to the new setup the pro I was working with noticed the shaft weight and confirmed my concerns, that the shaft was basically way too heavy for my feeble swing.

Whilst this isn't particularly pleasing I do recognise that the fitters fitted against the swing they saw on the day. On the day the original setup dropped my spin numbers and significantly straightened up ball flight.

Am encouraged by the amount of run that this thing gets, ball shoots off and just keeps going when it hits the deck, and will start to look for a more appropriate shaft when the season's out. I know nothing about shafts but the same pro has offered to help me find something that suits and I'm pretty sure that I'll be able to sort something at a reasonable price from e-Bay.

If I can get the combo right this thing will be a rocket and well worth the £270 I paid for it. It's adjustability means it's a good long term investment for me as my swing evolves.

I just have to stop looking at the 915 in the shops :o

Summed it up brilliantly there. You get fitted against how you are swinging it on the day.

And rumour has it that shafts actually make hardly any difference.;)

Thought u hit the driver great at Davyhulme when you kicked my butt!!!!

Custom fit is a difficult thing when someone's swing is constantly changing. Let's face it, we are not pros. Now I just look for 12 degree drivers and stiff shafts. Loft is your friend!!! I got custom fit once and ended up with a stiff 9.5 Cleveland superlite thing that went with a low cut like a bullet, the launch, spin, distance numbers were apparently perfect for me but I was so inconsistent with it.

And is getting there again now. Better today and in play most of the time.

If my putting hadn't decided to take a slide would have walked it.

No helicopters today Stu, keeping that soft draw arc for special occasions 😃
