Well after mixed fortunes on the golf course, I rolled up for coaching session no 2 last night.
Played two rounds of golf over the last two weeks, the first one I was hitting the ball superbly, but couldn't chip or putt for toffee. Played in the winter league on Saturday, didn't hit two good shots in succession but chipped and putted like Seve. 26 putts (which includes three missed 4 footers!), 10 up and downs! Stupid game!
So, we started off checking the swing. Good and bad news, I have stopped the tilt I had last time, but was still very flat, bugger! Worked on the takeaway of the club, something I do tend to rush, concentrated on taking it straight back then allowing the right elbow and wrist to hinge naturally to the top of the backswing.
Next was working on a good efficient downswing with plenty of lag, this was tough, I do have a wee tendency to come over the top. My swing thought was to try and hit the ball with my right elbow. Mixed results with this initially, but when I started catching them, the quality of the strike was excellent.
Last part of this was keep my weight centred between heel and ball of foot, and feeling the weight on my right heel at top of back swing. This was good, really felt like I was screwing my right heel to the floor and loading up plenty of power.
Then hit some balls with my new ft-i driver, idiot-proof, no improvements required!
Finally onto putting. Kevin changed my set-up a little, had me standing a wee bit further away from the ball, and lowered my hands (moved them towards the body). He then shortened my backswing, which really gave me the feeling of putting a positive stroke on the ball.
For long putts, I was to pick a spot online 3-4 feet from the ball and just concentrate on hitting the ball over that. That was good for stopping me from coming up on the putt too early, and made the putts more accurate.
For short putts I was to focus on a small point at the back of the hole as opposed to the hole itself.
Felt like I was putting more like I was last summer when I was draining most things from 10 feet in (averaging about 30 putts per round, unfortunately most of them were for bogeys or worse!!!).
Roll on the weekend!
