Currently my bag includes:

Nike driver (temporary - old model whilst my cleveland is being assessed by warranty dept)
Callaway x hot deep 3 wood
Taylormade RBZ stage 2 19 deg (to be replaced)
Nike CPR irons 5 - PW
Benross 52 & 58 wedges
Wilson staff putter

I'm thinking about upgrading the irons but now having second thoughts as potentially when I improve I may get fitted properly (say in a years time). There's a set of Cobra Amp-D irons in mint condition for £110 posted?

I may also change the hybrid to a stiff shaft. What loft is best? 20 deg?

The wedges are ok but I've hit other ones better so when a decent set of 52/58 or 54/60 come along I'll change.

Putter will be replaced with a cleveland shortly.

Thoughts on iron and hybrid would be appreciated.

Irons are always personal -'try lots out and see what suits you , what gives you confidence whenever you play. There are lots of sets out there to pick from - IMO would only get new irons if getting improvement - to judge that work recommend a fitting

So you think it would be a risk just buying without trying eg off gumtree?

From a personal persepctive I wouldn't buy any make or model I've never hit before via the internet but that doesn't make it wrong for everyone. I would say if you are an average build and don't need any modifications for being say six feet four then why not. It's a personal choice and mine would be to try before I buy but loads on here picked up bargains online and never looked back

Got to agree with homer, custom fitting is ideal but in terms of buying clubs without trying ive bought plenty of stuff from this forum for bargain prices just to try. Some clubs work others dont but i normally find i can put them on ebay and easily make my money back.

It's not a risk - but the clubs may not suit you , you might not like them , they could be fitted for someone of a differing build than you

The risk is you could spend money on clubs that just aren't for you.

Ok for where I am in my game do you think cobra amp-d irons (2012/13) in mint condition are upgrades to the CPR (2007)?

I wouldnt be able to tell you that - only yourself and a pro could judge that.

Ok I think what I'm saying is are the clubs better than the Nikes as they are newer. Until I try them I won't now but for £110 is that a good price?

Any thoughts on loft of hybrid?

Why are you changing the loft and shaft of the hybrid ?

Again to change shafts its best to try and check with a pro

I think a 18-20 deg will fit well, however the regular is a bit too flexy. I bought it as I got a good price and sold my stiff shaft one. However the stiff shaft was more consistent...!

Really it is about going and trying these clubs. I could tell you to always go stiff/ x stiff stafts but that is what works for me and not necessarily you.

If you see a deal online then it is up to you and your personal choice. I don't like buying online because I would rather try the club first. I have only ever bought 2 clubs online. 1 because it was such a good deal that I know I would get my money back if I didn't like it by selling it on. This club was so good for me that I bought another one in a different loft as I knew it would be good. 1 more and I complete the set. I would suggest online only for very educated guesses personally. Mine was a Ping hybrid and generally I hit Pings well followed by the shaft being right and the price made it worth a punt.

I really would suggest going to a pro and getting an MOT type lesson on your game and seeing what he suggests

Why not. I'm sure you'd get most of the money back on a resale but ultimately it's down to you and your preferences. I'd perhaps start with your teaching pro (if you use one) or the club pro and see what he thinks in terms of GI (Game Improver) or SGI (Super Game Improver) and try narrowing the choice into those categories
