Morning all.

As a newcomer to the game, I'm not really thinking about committing to a club any time in the immediate future, but I would like to get a feel for what's on offer locally for when I eventually do come to making a decision.

So! Could anyone local share their opinions/experiences? I've seen a few people on here who play around my area so far, I'd be interested to hear what people think.

The 4 closest clubs to me are Prestwich, Whitefield, Stand and Bury, to give people an idea of where I'd be looking.

Cheers!

I played stand with odvan who is a member. Lovely course with plenty of hills. Nice variety of holes and in good nick. Bit of a thinkers course as you can't just bang driver every hole.

Never played the others so no help there. Pm odvan and he will take you around stand. he's a nice man. Always giving pound coins away.

Git.

But very true :(

Out of the four you mention, bias or not, Stand is the better course and with that comes the challenge of it - it can play quite tough. I certainly found so in my qualifier on Saturday but the less said...

I've hosted a couple off here round there, thing is, they haven't really posted a lot since. But I didn't murder them, honest.

You're welcome to come round for a knock when its convenient for us both - my only caveat is that you don't say 'innit' or replace the 'e' and the 'a' in the word 'great', with the number 8 when you text :D.

There's a real strong crew of NW lads who play together quite a lot so if you're up for wider ranging meets, well, its the best thing I've done to maximise my golfing experiences. You do have to play with scousers sometimes but you learn to switch off after a bit ;)

I would agree on that

Stand is a cracking course that requires lots of thought rather than brawn to get around it.

Some cheeky holes on there. Very picturesque also.

Good drainage too as (i think) it is sat an chalk ?

Have played Whitefeild which i enjoyed, however was not a huge fan of Prestwich . Strange layout and a bit wet underfoot

Gaz, If you play your cards right he now gives away notes, he talks a good game tho :D

To be fair, I think he is at that point were we will have to give him a society handicap, just so that he can compete, otherwise it's not fair.

I know it will be a dent to the pride, but I think a 22 h/cap should be ok, and then we can cut him from there, IF REQUIRED!

Whitefield has some easy par 4's and tough par 3's. Between Whitefield and Stand, I think Stand just shades it, don't know about the other two.

Will happily play our next bounce games off 22 Pete, appreciate your understanding during what is a traumatic time on the course. £1.50 front, £1.50 back and £2.00 over all? Excellent ;)

Lol, Stand just about shades it over Lee Park too...

OK, I'm off 16 though.:D

Only cos your goat curry in non-kosher.;)

Stand is a nice, well draining & interesting course, a good club too, certainly worth looking into, playable year round too.

Whitefield used to be be a good course but it seems to have gone downhill since they sold off the old clubhouse for housing, it almost feels like a glorified Muni these days.

IMO The best inland course in Manchester/lancs is Manchester GC just outside Middleton, its a bit pricey compared to the others locally but if you were looking around North Mcr its head and shoulders above the rest.

Thanks for the replies everyone, sounds like I may be giving Stand a bit of a go once I can spend a bit more time practicing (exams coming up soon, all else in life tends to take a backseat!).

Following on from this, do people think it's best to become a member of a club or to remain neutral and pop around paying visitors green fees when you're still relatively new and getting to grips with the game?

Depends what you value really. Stereotyping massively I'd argue the older generation probably value to 'club membership' side more where as the younger generation do not so much as some just want to rock up, play the game, snap chat and get on with doing something else. But of course there will always be exceptions to that rule.

Also you need to think about value for money (do you need to play a joining fee) and if you will get bored playing the same course a lot. Also how much will you value the social side of being a member and having an official handicap. There are plenty of web site deals out there at the moment for visitors you can use, but these hardly ever include weekend mornings, so if that is important to you then membership is the way forwards. Also I'd say you will probably get better more quickly being a member, having a few lessons with the pro and playing in a few comps with/against better players.

For what its worth, I've been playing for roughly 15 years and I spent the the first 9 being a nomad, travelling round just playing courses, no H'cap etc.

I started to get bored with it and found myself drifting away from the game.

I eventually got round to joining a club, got a H'cap & started playing in comps etc. It was like starting playing all over again. I got my passion back for the game instantly and it hasn't really dwindled since.

Id say if your competitive in any way, if its possible, Join a club as soon as you can.
You won't get bored of playing the same course as you'll be too busy focussing on trying to post a score each week and getting your H'cap down.

Being a nomad is fine if your happy to just learn the game and have a knock with mates etc for a few quid, but for me there's much more to the game as a club golfer, and you can still travel and play elsewhere with Reciprocals & open comps etc.

Didn't realise you were back at Stand Matt, if you ever fancy a knock give me a shout.

Foliage finder, I live in North Manc and am a bit of a nomad golfer myself. I'm also fairly crap. If you ever fancy a game anywhere, let me know. I still haven't played half the courses around here.

Not seen you around for a while Danny. Offer still stands for Mcr when you fancy a knock.

Stand and Whitefield are both nice courses, Manchester is great but maybe a bit tough for a beginner, my course Ellesmere is decent and only 10 mins from Whitefield, happy to take you round if you want to try it.

Ey up Danny,

Good to hear from you. Just been lurking in the dark corners then - aye matey, I am - would be good to have a knock and a catch up. I'm quite sporadic with availability, don't necessarily plan weekday stuff until the last minute but Sunday afternoons seem quiet on course, unless there's a major comp on. I'll be in touch.

I think I've played once since Conwy and that was last week, haven't had much chance due to working 6 days a week. Still lurking here as always. I'll pm you both my mobile number, much easier to keep in contact that way. I'd be up for a game whenever if I'm free.
