Club Pro Jailed for Stealing £40k

Sick!

The bit that rubs me up the wrong way are:

Mr Charman said Baxter was suffering from depression when he started to steal from Market Harborough Golf Club.
"My client was a person of previous good character," he said.

Where they say he was depressed... that is not a reason to rob people!

And where they say he was of previous good character.... no he was not, he had just not been caught yet.

Disgraceful, he was on the best part of 46k a year as well:eek:

I heard about a similar case in my area but it could not be proven so please do not ask me the clubs involved. The club pro had been at this particular course for 10 years when one morning a committee member came in and told him they were bringing in a new system to take green fees and make organising tee times easier rather than the pro just entering them in on his PC or book!! Anyway a couple of months later the Pro handed in his notice and left the club. Fair enough people move on no problem you would think. So the club set on a new pro who was straight into operating the new system. At the year end reports the club noticed green fee taking were approx. 4k up on previous years, so they ask the pro if he had done any marketing to bring in more players, he said he hadn't so a bit of head scratching was done after members said they had not noticed a substancial increase in players so after some detective work they came to the conclusion that the pro had been pocketing green fees for around 10 years. They reckon he has had about 35k out of the club

Our Secretary was jailed last year for defrauding a similar amount from our club...up go the subs!

Not now he has been caught it wont be. The thing I find most stupid of all about this is that he put a members annual subs into his name and had it paid into his own account as if that will not get discovered

46k is a decent wage for a club pro nowdays.

TBF, we don't know how much he had to pay out of that, assistant pro etc.

However, when there is so much being talked about supporting your pro, this then is a damming situation that does the sport no favours.

I believe this may have been total earnings i.e. including shop sales & lessons. Knowing the Club in question I don't think that figure would have been his retainer.

That's sad to see - most club pros have a very good rep.

Sad to see and something that does tarnish the good names of other pros not only in the vicinity but up and down the land. Depression is a horrible disease but there can be no excuse for theft on that scale
