Morning everyone,

I'm relatively new to golf so would really appreciate peoples opinion.

Can you have a look at the link below which is to Cheadle Golf Courses membership fees page? It has a Graduate membership of £165 a year with no joining fee.

Do they mean University Graduate? Would there be a time limit - graduated within the last three years?

http://www.cheadlegolfclub.com/Fees.html

I have emailed the Club Secretary for clarification but they are not in until tomorrow.

Cheers

Mike

On a side note, I was nearly physically sick when I saw the membership fees(for a nine holer). On the other hand, I suppose people will feel the same if they knew what I paid for my golf.

I think the same as you AF, should be student.

Why do students get all these perks? It annoys me because as of 16 I was paying income tax and NI contributions while many of my mates didn't pay a thing and got discounts off of everything until they were 21.

I know what you mean about prices though AF, it makes me chuckle. A club near me are even advertising in the local rag for members and have stopped their joining fee tp attract new members but with subs of £800 for a shortish course they are struggling. I wouldn;t pay it and a lot of their members are going elsewhere. If they made it £500 they would have a new member in me.

Cheers for the replies. I think Student is probably correct, great. I'm not paying £50 a month to play a nine hole course! Most of the 18 holers in Manchester are around £700 - 800 joining fee plus £700 - 800 a year fees. Currently saving to buy our first house so no way i can pay that.

Micky, There are quite a few clubs in the NW waiving joining fee's to attract new members. Withington, Heyrose, Swinton, Prestwich, Hazel Grove too name a few. All are good courses but will still set you back between £650 - £800. If you go through this link you can to the websites for details. http://www.golfcourseguides.co.uk/home.htm

I really dont understand golf clubs that want to charge an entrance fee these days. I know that its a private club and they can basically do what they want but legally and morally I think its wrong.

In todays society when people with certain jobs get moved around the country and have to move family its crazy. You could be talking £2k every 2 or 3 years to continue playing golf! Shocking!!!!!

Agree on a lot of points here.

Membership of a shortish 9 hole course near me is £94.00 for a year. I played there last year when I was learning to play.

Hate the idea of joining fees. Memberships are down at most of the clubs near me and yet they all are still charging a £300.00 joining fee for new members

Thats cheap!!!! Alot of golf courses are still charging X2 annual fee as a joining fee. So if your fee/subs are £650 a year you need another £1300 up front as a joining fee???? Why???

Its disgusting. :D

Because the greedy tweed jacket wearing b@stards probably need a couple of nice new antiques to adorn the offices.

There are just no incentives to join clubs down here. The one I mentioned is desperate for new members but offering nothing to attract them, they could do 7d for price of 5d membership but won't as they are snobby people who have only just woken up and smelt the merde. In their deluded minds they probably still think people should come to them and be grateful to get in at any price.

A lot of clubs are doing green-fee memberships which are great for the occasional golfer, you still get your handcap, use of club facilities and can play in all competitions. The membership is £99 at the one I looked at and you get a green fee reduced by £2. A good idea.

I just joined my first club last month for £40 a month and no joining fee. Speaking to the pro he told me since the offer had been started he got 60 new members and once he reaches what he is happy with then the offer ends or christmas eve what ever comes first.

I think at clubs that are struggling to get members joining fee's are going to die away.

Unless the club is a "top club" (snobby) or the council members are i paid to get in so you are paying

Oh God, I played Palacerigg once and I wouldn't pay £40 for a lifetime membership.
Westerwood's nice as is Dullatur.
I pay £300 for my golf. Plus £130 for my Club.

Cheers for the link Junior, i didnt realise there are so many Golf Courses around here!

Ok well i have had a reply from Cheadle Golf Course and Graduate does indeed refer to Student. They did kindly offer me the £600 a year full membership! I pointed out that technically it should read 'Under Gradute' on the website, dont think that will go down too well.

If anyone knows a good course in manchester which charges say £300 a year with no joining fee please let me know :o

Mike

Geronimo, where do you play?

Westerwood?

Palacerigg <img src="http://www.golf-monthly.co.uk/forums/images//graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

westerwood now, I have always liked the course and thought it got a bad rap for some reason.
Might be something to do with the fact seve took his name of the course as a co-designer

Whilst I hate to see students getting a free (cheap) ride, I wish I could have joined a club for this money when I was at uni......had to wait until graduating and joining the ranks of paid-up tax payers to join a golf club!

All keen players should join a club either as juniors or students....the best way in!
