Moving back to the north east area, probably Wallsend, shields, tynemouth area. so looking to join a club. after suggestions based on following criteria

1. course must be enjoyable to play , rather than just a good name or high profile reputation.

2. clubhouse and social side must be good, used to the banter and the social crack of Forces life and all that entails in the 19th hole.

3. practice facilities and club pro

4. price is not realy a consideration as in the lucky position, that unless it is absolutely kicking the arse , then if the above 3 are met ill pay the fee.

currently use wallsend driving range when im home visiting family.

any info or thoughts from north east based golfers greatly appreciated

Im from Newcastle, and my mate is the Pro at Wallsend Driving range, and teaches from there
Wallsend course -- fairish -- not really a Clubhouse though, more a small Bar, and open to the Public, but Owners have BIG Plans to develop the site.........When........???..........Dunno
Tynemouth -- Got Practice Ground and a Good Teaching Pro with great rep -- does county level coaching too -- Im not a great fan of the course -- but thats just me -- cant speak of the clubhouse or Banter
Shields -- Ive Played South Shields GC -- decent course -- but I know nothing else about the Place

Good Luck in your return and finding a New Club

I'm from Sunderland area so not 100% Courses in Newcastle area but depending on how much your looking to spend on membership. Played garesfield before good course but can see it been wet in winter. Played tynemouth before good course and nice little clubhouse.
People go on about arcott hall dont know if its worth checking out. Could also try close house if you have the money to join

Hi There, i live in London but am from Shields and get up whenever i can and play with my cousin. I like Tynmouth as a location and the pro is very helpful and friendly but i find the course a but boring and flat. My cousin and his mates either play at Newcastle United GC in wideopen, (even more boring), or chester le street which is interesting and seems like a good members club atmosphere. As a course i prefer Whitley Bay but my impression is that they are up themselves and living in the past, but do have a waiting list for 7 day members. South Shields i also like as a course and it is pretty traditional with lots of competition activity. Try them all!

Arcot Hall is not too far away up the A19 from Wallsend, nice Course, play it a few times every year, very nice greens last couple of years, suffers badly in winter though, or when wet, but have invested lots of £££ lately, so hopefully will improve, they still have a joining fee up there

Newcastle United Golf Club is DEFO NOT in Wideopen, its near the Town Moor, just off the Central Motorway, and the Closest Course to Newcastle City Centre
And its DEFO NOT Boring
Its a True TEST of golf, undulating fairways, an inland links type turf in places, very exposed, almost always Very Windy up there
The Club and Clubhouse is Possibly the Friendliest in the County, not Snooty in the least, its like a Social Club/Local Pub, with a Golf Course Outside

But KEEF'S opinion on Whitley Bay is Spot on
Very Snooty Place, sizeable fees, joining fees, and only currently has 5 day vacancies, then after a year u are offered 6 day membership, which is mon-fri and after 4pm sat and after 1030am sunday, then eventually u will be offered full 7 day membership

Theres Plenty golf courses in the area, Im sure u will have Fun trying them all out, before deciding which is best for u

You are right Moogie, i got the location of the N.U, club wrong. However, i think it is scruffy and featureless. There are plenty excellent links courses in Northumberland and i am afraid that course is poor in my opinion. We will have to agree to dissagree!

Im from the north east, although now live in northern Ireland, I was a member at ramside, good course and facilities, big plans for more holes too to go with the 27 they have, good members and craic also.
Chester le street I found snobby, played against 2 of their members in a ne golfer match, beat them there very rude. Ok course imo.
Tynemouth and whickham have played good decent enough courses but that's all I know, good enough greens when I played them.
Played Whitley bay, ok course too.

Ponteland good too, bit wet though.

Good luck.

I'm from Newcastle but I'm a member at whickham golf club, really like the course and only a 15 minute drive for me.

I've played quite a few local courses:
Tynemouth - a bit boring, can get a lot better for the money
Wallsend - very boggy in the winter and I'll be extremely surprised if the "big plans" for it get followed thorough. Been talk of it for ages
Parklands - has a range which is decent but most of the members are *** (I used to be a member there)
Newcastle united - nice course, don't think it's featureless (only played it the once)
Newcastle city - decent enough course, members are supposed to be snobby, not sure if there's still a waiting list
Northumberland - really nice course with quality greens, pretty expensive and I think it's quite "old school"
Chester-me-street - got bored half way round

Whitley bay is supposed to be good but I've heard it's very snobby.

Let me know how you get on or if you need any further info

Dodger u are 'Dead Right'
The County is NOT Blessed with many Really good Courses, some decent courses, some poor ones, but NO real Great courses
There are Probably Too Many, if truth be said, within too small an area, and if 1 closed, the Rest would probably all be Full up then..........
NUGC is a cracking Club, the most laid back Golf Club Ive ever visited, and the Presentation Night there is Defo something that u wont experience anywhere else
Just last year the Course held the County Championships, and recieved nothing but Praise, from PROPER Golfers.........

If anybody is ever in the Area, put this course on your list to visit, a Warm Welcome will be given from everybody, without doubt, the Friendliest Golf Club in the area
