Ok so as you may know I finally submitted 3 cards for my first handicap, one card was something like 93 on a 68 SSS.

Other 2 were something like 97 and 96. I got my first handicap and it was 28.

Hmm, is that because I played with my Dad who also didn't have a handicap and was putting in his 3 cards too?

I know I'm much better than a 28, so wondering how that will impact when I play in comps with other players, they may get miffed if they lose to someone on a 28, who quite possibly could be 21-25.

something like.....?

93 would suggest a start of 25, assuming there were no triples. less if there were. althoug I thoght you had to have a memebr with a current handicap as ypur marker.

if the 'something like 93 was 96 then fine - otherwise you should query it. I would actually be surprised at a card that was 96 and delivered 28 because of stableford adjustments; but at 96 28 is possible, at 93 it's impossible.

You have been given your handicap so just go out and play

If you believe you should be off lower then it will come down or put in supplementaries

Believing your much better than your handicap and actually doing it are two totally different things

Don't worry about. Nor feel guilty if you win comps because of it.

It will sort itself out in 3 or 4 comps.

these together sum it up if your score was less than +28 on SSS something is wrong if not then go shoot some numbers and get some cuts.

Indeed they are....

The handicap you've been given is only supplementary, and so you can't win any of your first 3 comps after getting your handicap (iirc), so that it can be adjusted if it is wrong. If your handicap is wrong, they'll change it if you play to better than 28 in comps. At least that's how it works at my club.

Well I shot an 88 last week, so I know I am not 28, although obviously officially I am. I think at my club it's because a recognised handicap member wasn't marking the score, but they told us to just put 3 cards in to start us off.

well you will absolutely trounce the first medal and take 1st place and all the prizes, good luck.

Then shoot an 88 in a comp with a card in your hand

Who marks your card has zero to do with the handicap you are given

I have shot a 67 but that doesn't make me a +4 player

So what is the point of putting three cards in? They might as well send you out in three comps and use those cards.

I'm not 100% sure how HC are worked out to start with, but assuming you had no horror holes, your 3 cards averaged out, roughly work out to be the HC you were given.

Should you play better in comps, then your club, at the HC secretaries discretion can raise or lower your HC over what you score would alter your HC.

Not sure. Is that not how it works at all clubs? Or is mine a bit backwards when it comes to the handicap system?

Certainly doesn't work like that at our place

As soon as your HC is competitive ( active ) you are then able to win any comp you enter

Hopefully. Pressure will probably creep in.

True.

Hmm, that's strange then. Thinking of moving clubs in October anyway, so not going to affect me, as I'm not going to get all 3 cards in before my subs run out, just a little strange. Why would they insist on such a rule if it's not one widely accepted by clubs around the country? Obviously had a lot of bandits entering high scoring handicap cards, and then winning competitions playing much better straight away, can be the only explanation. Weird.

A handicap comes from your best card of the three, not the average.

And I don't believe the HC secretary can raise or lower you HC at their own discretion.
