I knew I should probably go get a custom fit if and when I bought my first new set of clubs (I'm using a second hand set bought off a bloke at work) but had no idea quite how much I needed it until recently.

Apparently, being 6ft and having a 39 inch wrist-to-floor comes out with a static fit on the PING chart of maroon (+4.5deg upright). Out of curiosity, I went along to a local shop and tried out a silver dot setup, as he didn't have any maroon ones in and wow, what a difference it made. I was in a much more comfortable position at setup, and the wide-right push that blights my game was as good as gone, replaced by a bit of an occasional hook that was probably more down to some residual faults that come from my current equipment. In the main, the ball flight was much more powerful and consistent.

Which, of course, leaves me with a problem. Unless there is some great windfall in our house anytime soon I can't get a new set of bats, but knowing how far out my current clubs are will surely wind me up more out on the course. I asked at the shop about bending my current set but he seemed a bit unsure and said he wouldn't be able to bend them all the way upright as I need, but surely if he can bend them some of the way and getting clubs that fit better, even if not perfectly, is a step in the right direction. Any thoughts?

tough one, what about ebay, 4 1/2 deg (maroon) come up and there wont be many bidders :)

go for older irons like G5, G10 or i10 can get them for a decent price

Depending of whether your current irons are cast or forged you will be able to get the moved to a more upright position. Cast will allow a skilled golf tech to bend them but not much maybe 2.5 degrees at most if you are lucky, if they are forged then they should allow for a bit more bending.

From what you write anything that stands your clubs more upright is going to help.

First thing I would do is get your current set measured and see what they actually play as.

Then, depending whether they are cast or forged, you may be able to get them adjusted to your spec'.

In your case (long legs, short arms?) the standard setup would appear to be rather a long way out!

Unlikely to get a set your spec in a hurry, but defo worth looking out for maroon dot in Pings on Ebay - and they are likely to be cheap too. Then bung yours on as standard and there shouldn't really be much overall cost to the change. VM1s were/are pretty good clubs - better looking than most GI sets.

As posted, it's only really safe to bend cast clubs about 2 degrees or so. Though Ping seem to be designed to be more-so, as that's all they do - with a few whacks with a rubber hammer! Forged clubs are softer, so bend a bit easier and safer, but 4* is about their limit too.

Good thinking on eBay. There's a few sets on there that look promising and shouldn't be too much of a cost to change.

Well, just to bump this older thread with an update. As you can tell from my sig, I found a set of silver dot Ping i5s in +1" on eBay.

Went down the driving range tonight and was not disappointed. The flight with the 3 iron was impressive, but I'm happiest about how well the shorter clubs performed. Much more consistent, and straight, on the chips.

Now just have to see how well they hold up on the course.
