I was looking through some old posts yesterday since I'm new here, and came across a couple about knowing the distance you hit each club.

At the moment I work on the fact that at my club fitting I hit my 3-iron x yds, and go down 10yds for each club down to PW, then 20yds down for each of my other wedges.

I'd like to get more accurate distances, but range balls can't be trusted and there are no suitable fields anywhere that I know of.
I guess I could go out on the course after everyone has started, but that presents its own problems too.

Then I started thinking about launch monitors since that's where I have my 3i distance from (and the clubs up from that), and wondered if any fitting centres hired their services out by the hour for this kind of thing especially since club fitting might be slowing down with finances what they are at the moment.

I'd definitely pay a sensible price to hit balls for an hour having someone note the carry distances.

Sorry if this has been covered before but like I said, I've not long joined.

Any thoughts?

OK at the risk of starting a flame war again, the way I did mine was to go to my practice ground at my club and hit ten balls with wach club, discount any mis-hits and then measure the shortest, longest and the average. I then repeated it into the wind to see what the difference was. A long winded and time consuming way but I got the data I need.

I'm not aware of anywhere that hires launch monitors out although some pro shops have them for C/F purposes but I don't think AG etc will let you use theirs purely to get your stats without the incentive of you buyig something in return

Thoughts.....hmm, firstly, ignore the custom fitting lark...a whizzy PC thing can't do real life.
According to an AG Launch Monitor, I was hitting my driver 164 yards.
I actually DO use range readings because unless you are playing with the worst balls ever made, the mid-irons are not so far out.

Working on the 20 yard wedge idea is OK if you are a powerful player. My wedges are 15 yards apart (checked with real balls on the club grass range) 85/100/115

From there I go up 10 per club but it's closer to 12 per club for PW/9/8

Consequently I use the basis of 10 per iron but beware not to overclub with short irons. If I'm 130, I'll never hit an 8.....even if my 9 iron averages 127 for example.

Doesn't take long to get the figures in your head.....and start noticing any problems. Recently, I've been flying over greens with my PW from 115, but other than that, I'm spot on.

We have a par 3 160 to front/174 to middle. A 5 iron IS the club but if it's right or left, it's in the bunkers 95%. A 4 iron will always get over the bunkers but often reaches the back fringe (188?) and sometimes a few yards short of the hedge (198?). If I'm feeling good, I hit 5. Otherwise a 4 every time.

Oh yes.....NOW I remember. I did in fact take my 7 iron to the real practice ground about a year ago. Not done it with my new irons though....

I don't see why it should start a flame war if everyone's sensible, but I obviously struck lucky and joined after whatever that refers to. I too hope it doesn't start again :)

Anyway. Yours was one of the old posts I read Homer, and it seems like a good way to do it, but the club I play at doesn't have a practice ground, only a range with few yardage markers (that may or may not be right), and I can't think of any open spaces near me big enough or that even allow golf to be played on them.

It looks like it'll be on the course, maybe one club a night.

Occasionally (when there's no-one within 2 or 3 holes behind me) I'll drop a ball at a specific yardage, take the club I think hits it that far, and providing I don't duff it I'll see how far from the centre of the green my pitchmark is if I'm fortunate enough to hit the green :o).

My first experience with a launch monitor in a golf shop gave me an instant distrust of them because it was saying I was hitting a 6-iron about 190yds!

My second however, was much better. I had a Titleist fitting and I thought the distances were about right for the clubs that were measured on the monitor. Just as an example it was saying my 3-iron was carrying around 200-205.
I've not had 200 into a green yet but I've had 190 a few times, and when I've hit the green with my 4i the pitchmark was within a few yards of the middle of the green.

Working 10yds back for each club doesn't seem too far off, but I'd be curious to know exactly because like you say, the gaps are probably more like 11 or 12, and then not the same through the clubs.
I've only been playing again a couple of months so hopefully I'll start to notice the little quirks as I hit more shots with each club.

Hi,
To get a rough idea every club has a 150 marker either to front or middle of green on a flat hole find out what club u hit 150 and work it out from there do the same if they have 200 and 100 yard markers only do it on a quite day at your club.
