After coming second in the medal last week, I decided to enter the club champs, which are this weekend. They are off the championship tees (anything between 10 and 50 yards back from the medal tees).

In preparation I played the course off the championship tees last night. Nett 77, which wasn't bad. However, I had 8 pars and a birdie on the card (almost a hole in one!). Unfortunately the other holes were littered with double and triple bogeys. The reason? Wayward driving.

I have the following dilemma.....do I

(a) Use my 3/5 wood off the tee, thus increasing my chances of findingteh short stuff, but accepting that some Par 4s will be played as Par 5s

or

(b) get the big stick out and play Par 4s as Par 4s, accepting that i may send a few sideways?!

I say: Have confidence that you'll find the fairway and use the driver.

The worst thing you could do is hit a 3/5 wood and then miss the fairway. As you'll be further back and still in trouble.

Yeah, pretty well. Which combo are you playing??

Club champs is Red-Yellow course. Playing off the green tees makes it interesting! I actually prefer it of some holes as the extra distance takes the danger out of play. But its just inconsistent driving that'll scupper me. Plus the weather forcast looks rubbish!

There are still enough holes that have enough room to smash the driver. Just got to go with what gives you confidence on the day. If it's the club champs then (no offence) I don't think there is much chance of winning the main prize so just aim at the handicap honours and try to use your h'cap wisely.

Good Luck

My advice is play each hole on its merits and on how you feel on the day. If you are quick out the blocks and swinging well be more agressive and if you are struggling a tad use your shots wisely and play for position and hope to hole a putt for par

There looks like heaps of space out there,, grip and rip the beastie.

This par 4 looks a bit short....

That Par 4 is a Par 3 dude - 185 yards downhill over a lake. Pin cut behind the tree on the right hand side!

The fairways are actually quite generous in size, so think I will just give it a bash and see what happens.

I'm pretty sure theres a few plus h/caps at Cumberwell and numerous young bucks heading that way so the main prize is not going to be coming your way so as someone said use your strokes wisely and dont get too caught up in your gross score. Think nett score and stay positive

I aint going for gross!!!! There is someone playing off +2 in it!

No i am concentrating on my division, possibly best nett, but most of all to enjoy it and not get too stressed about the whole thing!

Thats the spirit GB

I reckon that bloke (+2) is Nick Korynevsky , played with him years ago

I've lost count of the number of times I've taken a 3 or 5 wood or even an iron for safety and ended up in bigger crap than if I had pulled the Driver out....
Give it a "Bertie Big Bash" and don't hold back. Smack it all around the gaff.
You might surprise yourself
