After my mad dash a couple of weeks ago during our acC qualifier, I've spoken to a few golfing friends who have suggested that our 2 scores from 2 rounds method of qualification is a bit dated, and costs a lot of players the chance to play in what is one of the biggest events in the club calendar.

Our fixtures are posted way in advance, so you can plan holidays etc etc around them, however, if one of the many things that can crop up crops up, then you're screwed!

I was wondering how qualification works at other clubs? I for one, regardless of my situation this year, think we should be going with a 2 scores from 3 rounds method of qualification.

36 holes Scratch medal.....simples.

I don't suppose any clubs do this anymore as very few golfers are fit enough and it would have to be held on midsummers day to complete.:o

Plenty of golf clubs still do it but ones that don't it won't because of the fitness of players it will because of time constraints and not blocking up the course for the whole membership.

Best 2 out of 3 for us. Works out best for us as it suits the membership as not everyone plays each week and gives everyone a chance to get a couple scores in.

Thanks guys! I sent an email asking about it, but was told that the process had been evolved over a number of years - when it hasn't been adapted for over 20 - but our handicap committee are forward thinking and progressive - but don't ask for their thoughts on ready golf!

No Qualfiying required - just enter the Comp , the more play in it the better

36 hole weekend Captwins Comp.

6 qualifying medals. Your best 2 scores count.

Best 60 qualify, but the number is increasing at the moment to encourage more to take part.

Totally support the more inclusive policy (it benefits the likes of me) but can see it's rendering the qualifiers less important. 6 fixtures are a large part of the season so a balance needs to be stuck, I think, between prestige and inclusivity.

You can't please everyone all the time I guess!!

Pretty sure there was no qualifying for our course championship, they just let all the members enter. They let me enter it anyway!

depends what you mean by qualifying?

I think anyone can enter.

ours is a 36 hole (2 rounds strokeplay over two week ends ) top 8 scratch and top 8 handicap then qualify for the Matchplay knockout section, which then takes place the Monday,Wednesday and final on Friday the next week.

Our Club Championship is 36 holes on one day with both the Gross and the Handicap comp being played at the same time, open to all members.

There was a time when it was two comps played on two different days, one for gross and the other for nett, the Gross Championship use to have a 'ballot out' around the 8 handicap level.

Our Seniors Championship is one event 2 x 18 holes played two different days, aggregate score, trophy for best gross and trophy for best nett, the only qualification criteria is that a player must have played in 3 Senior comps during the preceding year to enter.

Interesting mix of responses. If the Club Championship or Championship Qualifying is a Scratch comp, why the need to have played a defined number of qualifiers before playing in the Championship event. I've always though that The Club Championship was the biggest event in the calendar for any club and that all members should have the chance to try and qualify for their club's event.

We still do the 36 hole qualifying over a weekend and then the matchplay stages with the top 16 are scheduled on the Monday and then over the rest of the following week with Finals Day the following Saturday. Yes it's a commitment to play all that golf if you make it to the Final, but, it's your Club Championship. It's the one event I really miss now that my serious playing days are over, there was always a buzz about the club during the Championship and it did invariably get the best golfers playing on Finals Day.

ours is a 2 prong event and whilst the purists wont like the Nett is very important too and that is the main reason for the qualification element

My old place was just put your name down and play. 18 medal on Sat and 18 medal on Sun. Must have returned 6 qualifying cards in last 12 months. But even if you hadn't you could still play, but weren't eligible to win. Which was great as it made for a real fun event.

As far as I can work out at my current place you have to be related to royalty for them to even tell you how to qualify for it.

We have a rule that any "major" (honour board event) can only be won providing you've five qualifying cards in form some and three for others. In the club champs while it's the best scratch score over the two days, it's usually only open to about 15-20 players realistically. That means the majority are after the handicap prize
