Does your Club have a "Bandit", no names etc, someone you truly believe manipulates his handicap throughout the year.
I'm aware of one guy at our Club that plays in the first 3 single comps of the year to keep his handicap active then only plays in 4BBB Comps for the remainder of the season. He's of 17, his partner plays off 4.

Nope...none that I am aware of. Different winners in comps, and the course is tough, so doesn't really allow for easy scoring and handicap protection

We have a guy that plays of mid teens. Always partners the same partner (off 1) and they regularly clean up in pairs events. He rarely enters individual comps, doing just enough to maintain an active handicap. He has been approached and had it suggested he needs to consider playing more qualifiers but has yet to do so a year or so later.

That's what happening with the bloke at our place, being watched this year!

Not a particular individual
But
There are 2 regular 4-balls that between them practically clean up the pairs events and most of the team events, especially the winter sweeps......

It doesn't matter how many qualifiers you make people play, if they want to protect their handicaps they will do so. It's easy to miss a putt here, duff a chip there. Not a lot you can do about it sadly.

There have been nods, winks and rumblings at ours about the odd suspect from time to time, but in fairness there's never been one habitual offender year in and year out.

I once had that stigma attached to me when off 26 I won our 11 hole roll up week after week with scores of 34. - 31 etc. in my first season.

In my defense I was totally unaware of the concept of banditry, and was further delighted when I was cut 2 shots and then subsequently another 2 in general play (and only in the context of 11 holes too) by the handicap committee who'd heard of my endeavours

Not every bandit is a paid-up member of the cheaters club, although in my experience there is no shortage of these chancers who infest corporate golf days or club open days. They really do ruin these events and are nothing more than sad cheating gits 👎

Not a bandit bit a guy that protects his vanity handicap.

Absolute bare minimum 3 cards in the year. Guaranteed to be .1 back on two of them and then one decent enough card in some obscure 'qualifier' somewhere to keep his lowish h'cap the same.

Strange thing is that if he was getting 2 shots more (which would be about right) he'd win loads!

It irritates me when I play an shoot a half decent round and people do your head in saying you're a bandit. I just want to get my handicap as low as possible but always seem to blow up on a hole or part of a round. Last round I just told them to pipe down. I don't care much about winning that would be a bonus. All I want to do is get my handicap as low as I can.

But I do know that there are people who play decent but if they find out others are playing really well and their not in with a shot of winning they will throw the round away so they don't lose shots. I think its a form of cheating and am happy to tell people. Couldn't give a toss what they think or say.

Our guy doesn't need to be watched. He has openly admitted in the bar he's only playing enough to keep an active handicap. What can you do? Can't make them enter and most of the pairs events are better ball so non-qualifiers

We've one at ours , only enters 3 cards a year but plays in 4BBB comps and is very successful, he has been cut one shot under general play

I have been called the club bandit on a number of occasions to the point I was accused of cheating when I won a lot of comps

Still get called a bandit now

At your level isn't that banter Phil, a bandit to me is someone who protects his handicap and only enters comps with a decent expectation of being amongst the prizes,
Cat 1 or even Cat 2 would have difficulty doing that IMO as "proper" players.

It was banter from some and quite bicuspid from others

Once you get labelled in golf, slow, bandit, cheat, it sticks with you for a very long time.......

I think people worry about this too much. So someone calls you a bandit, whether in jest or not? Who cares!? I'm more worried about me and my scores than what anyone else does or shoots.
