What clothing do you like to have in your locker for autumn golf? This is my first autumn playing and I'm playing Lytham Green Drive tomorrow. Forecast is dry, but 11 degrees. I've got waterproof trousers/jacket just in case, but obviously don't want to be wearing those unless necessary. All my clothing is summer oriented so am going to try and pick up a couple of bits from the pro shop at the range later.

Nothing wrong with sticking on your waterproof's to keep you warm.

If I were you I'd have a pop to Sports Direct or somewhere, pick up a cheap under armour base layer top thingy (last time I looked they were miles cheaper than buying at a golf shop for the same item). Put that on with t shirt and jumper, you'll be fine.

Agreed, although I find them restrictive, particularly the jacket.

Good call, but Sports Direct is not somewhere I can easily get to in the time constraints. ;)

I'll wear waterproof trousers instead of ordinary trousers if I think it's going to be chilly - the difference they make is enormous - then base layer, polo shirt, and thin jersey or lightweight waterproof jacket - wooly hat and Galvin Green Skyler in bag to use if needed

Waterproof arent really the best way to keep warm

Layer system

Base layer
T shirt
Jumper
Fleece/Insula

It's all about the layers but I'm not a fan of paying extra for specialist golf clothing. It's not really a very athletic sport so I'm not sure it needs "performance" clothing.

I have got a set of Ashworth waterproofs and will sometimes stick the trousers on even if it's not raining (but is cold). Other than that, I'll have a t-shirt under a long-sleeved polo, under a jumper. If you've got layers, you can swap and change according to how you feel.

As the saying goes: "There's no such thing as bad weather - merely inappropriate clothing"

Enjoy your round.

I wear a base layer, polo shirt and Stuburt wind/waterproof jumper and I will take a short sleeved rain top and my golf jacket. I have just bought some Stormberg Wintra trousers which are lined and shower proof so hopefully I wont need my proquip waterproof trousers unless we have a monsoon!

Thanks Shep. How does that sit with dresscodes that stipulate clothing must be designed for golf?

I've seen that 'designed for golf' phrase used before and, in my opinion, it's unenforceable because it can't be defined. A Matalan polo shirt is as acceptable as a Galvin Green polo shirt. Can I wear Marks and Spencer socks or do they have to be FootJoy? If I wear £10 belt from Asda instead of a £50 belt from IJP - should I be thrown off the course?

"Acceptable for golf" (meaning acceptable to the members!) is a better phrase - at least it means something.

I'm a big fan of a lightweight windproof top. They are ideal for Autumn golf. A good one will not restrict, as waterproof ones sometimes can, and they are comfortable to wear. I have a Sunice one with a 1/4 zip styling. They keep the wind from chilling you and are ideal. Plenty of makes do this style and they come in around £30-£35.

Layered clothing and a windproof half-sleeve top keeps me going through winter. I wear the same IJP trousers as I do in summer and just add some thermal long johns.

The big problem I have is keeping my hands warm. None of the winter playing gloves work because as soon as they get damp (from picking up wet and frosty balls) my fingers go numb. I can just about manage with a combination of hand warmers and mitts but I'd like to find something better one day.

Thanks Shep - makes a lot of sense :)

You'd think that proper waterproof winter gloves would be a good niche. I have Sealskinz for when I used to cycle to the station everyday. Not the warmest, but 100% waterproof even in driving rain. In fact they're quite thin, and have grippy silicone stuff on the fingers. Might have to give them a go at the range and see how they feel.

I've been trying to source an Adidas Climaheat Fill jacket - the one Jason Day wore at The Open. After months of looking, I emailed Adidas, who told me to email TaylorMade (), who basically said "yes, this is massively popular, but now that it's winter in the northern hemisphere, and coming up to Christmas, we've stopped making it. We won't replace it until autumn 2016".

What the actual?

They've done you a favor there to be honest!
