Playing in a comp yesterday, on the 4th my ball lodged itself very friendly like against a nice thick tree root. If it wasn't a comp, there's no way I would have attempted to play it, and in hindsight, I never will again.....

Attempted to scoop it away with a 5 iron, only for the ball to fly vertically upwards and smash me in the eye! Fortunately I did react and tried to move back, this probably saved my eye as the ball hit the very left corner of my eye socket missing the eyeball by about 1/2 a cm. 😵

Was quite weird, I Hit the floor in slow motion it seemed and I remember thinking "why am I falling?, ok, I'm still conscious, and opening my eye relieved that I could still see. All before hitting the deck. It was only then I found I was covered in blood. Fortunately, wiping the blood off seemed to stem the flow quite quickly, and apart from the impact pain I felt alright. Very lucky as that was my good eye, would be stuffed if I couldn't see with it.

On the plus side, my ball did wind up 50yds further down the middle of the fairway, and I did manage to finish the round.

Bit of a shiner today though😎🤕 Was going to post a pic but can't figure out how to do it from my phone - no options appear.

Will never play from a root again, not even in comp, a "penalty" shot is better than losing an eye! In fact I'm now an advocate of getting free relief from tree roots - a golf ball hit at 90+ mph starting from 1.5 metres away could be pretty lethal.

Glad it turned out ok.

On a different note: Most people don't realise this but in case it helps people avoid injury you are allowed to probe the area around your ball to test for hidden roots with a tee or similar (as long as you don't improve your lie etc)

Never quite understood why you can claim relief from standing water that might get you a bit wet but you get no relief from tree roots that can cause permanent injury and /or end golfing "careers".

Completely different situations.

Casual water is usually unseen and, by definition is temporary. Tree roots are generally near or at the base of trees which are both visible and permanent.

Just take relief under penalty.

I was lucky when playing last year in Spain. My ball was about three yards from a tree but I had plenty of room for a full swing. The ball was sitting nicely and there was no thought of a tree root as it was covered by a good layer of soil and grass. I hit my shot over water to the green but my club stopped when it hit the root. I was lucky not to damage my wrist but did not see the ball fly anywhere and neither did my playing partners. We did not hear a splash and after a couple of mins went to the green where my ball was lying , hidden from us by a swale.

I thought later that I could easily have had the ball fly up to my face but there was no sign that a root was close to the surface. I will certainly be careful in future.

Glad you're ok.

Ever since slasher's trials and tribulations a while ago I don't play any shots now where I don't feel safe, competition or not.

I know how you feel , I did much the same years ago, only mine nearly hit the crown jewels.
My inner thigh was black and blue, very close call , phew !!!.

Once in a moment of madness I decided to hit a hybrid from a bunker, caught the top and spun back and hit me in the face. Luckily I had sunglasses on or my eye would have taken it.

Glad to hear that you are OK

Sounds horrible that

As a new golfer, anyone tell me why roots are so dangerous? Few times I have had my ball in the trees and hit a shot, never had a problem yet

Good job you didn't keep your eye on the ball.

Glad your ok me man.

ps what happend to mr wokingham

The point is that golfers will often play the ball to avoid the penalty (as the OP did). After all "it will never happen to me". But as we know, it does happen. There are more important things in life than a shot in golf, so just take the temptation away and provide relief.
Is a staked tree more important than an eye or wrist? Not in my book, but in golf that seems to be the case.
