Is anyone a member or can give an insight into the place...

Thinking about county membership as I need a base to play up north and whilst I do enjoy playing Dunstanburgh as a home from home, facilities wise this would be better

Still don't understand why the don't do free range balls though..
 
Played both courses but not a member, not that rich. Nice courses, lovely set up. The experience as a whole is actually better than the courses but that doesn't mean they are not worth playing.

What questions do you have? Plenty of people on here have played it enough to help I suspect.
 
I played there earlier this year and came away feeling VERY underwhelmed by the experience.
We got a free upgrade to the Colt course which is the championship course. If I had been charged the full green fee of £110, I would have been straight back in the pro shop after asking for a part refund.
The bunkers only came into play on 2 holes, I was expecting more difficulty and more of a challenge.
I have no desire to return to the place and much prefer Matfen Hall.

Just a general feel for the place, as I'm up from down south probably playing alone.
Prefer if I could jump on a range or a great short game area like brocket was or Woburn is but being brutal, I've not seen any close north of the Tyne.
 
The Colt is a beautifully kept course built in the wrong place. Far too hilly to the extent that it spoils the enjoyment of the course. Two of our club champs have played in a Champion of Champions tournament there & both hated it. I've played it twice, once for free & once half price. I would not hurry back.
 
They do give him a big wedge so that may help the decision.

I don't think anyone would claim that we have a UK top 20 course up here. We have what we have. Close House has had a lot of money spent on it in terms of club house, facilities and course but I agree both courses have their downsides. If however country membership is not expensive then having the option of playing two very well kept courses and going into a very nice clubhouse afterwards seems pretty good. After all what would the other options be?

Has a driving range....mats
No grass range
Practice facilities will not be what you will be expecting
Not great to be honest

Courses are immaculate
Hardly surprising due to the number of greens staff, and lack of play

It's the nearest course to my house
But out of my budget for membership
Not that I'd like to play there every week either

The Colt
Their "no.1" course, is ok.......left last time very underwhelmed

last time I played it was with mr ferries as a junior many moons ago... par three first hole, was underwhelmed then. Got to say that a lot of the course I remember as good 20 years ago such as Morpeth, parklands, arcot.. are a lot worse than I remember. Maybe I'm just getting too old and the memory is going !

Maybe matfen will be a better option as it's half the price and may venture around the area again. I do like the Northumberland links

If you last played it many moons ago then you will find it very different now, very different. Clearly not to everyone's taste though. Memories tend to play tricks, they exaggerate both ways.

Membership fees up here, close house excepted, are pretty cheap and the consequence of that may well be investment in the course is not as great as elsewhere leaving us behind wealthier areas. My own experience of playing around harrogate and north Leeds for example is that there are a number of courses that are far superior to what we have here in terms of quality, condition of course etc. The plus side is the cheaper fees mean more people can afford to play the game. Just my view.
 
I've played both courses at slayley hall and only the colt course at close house and I think slayley is much better than close house in my personal opinion

Totally agree with all of the above.

Really enjoy playing the Slaley hall Priestman course
I really believe the front 9 on the championship course, the Hunting, is the best 9 holes anywhere in our county.

Close house from a maintenance point of view is faultless
But design wise, a lot of "nothing" and forgettable holes
About 1/3rd of the ( Colt ) course is either played up or down some very steep hills...
Not even sure if it's playable 12 months of the year, as when we played it, the 13th was played short, the 14th might as well not have been on, due to the altered set up, all due to drainage

I'm at Slaley this week and played the Priestman yesterday which is very wet under foot and the Hunting today which is even worse. Splattered with mud, pools of water on the course, flooded bunkers. Been coming here every year for 15 years and this is as bad as I can remember

I know they can't choose the weather but the courses shouldn't be open in my opinion.

I'm glad you've said this cause I was gonna book a round for Saturday.. think I will stay at longhirst my home club
