I bought these last week, graphite, senior shafts. I've never been great with my irons and seeing a pp transform his game using these, I wanted to give them a go. I tried a few shots with his, that was enough. Today was my first round with them.
For anyone not familiar with them, they are meant to be a cross between an iron and a hybrid, an iron hybrid you might say
. If you want thin blades, these are not for you. At the same time, they aren't full hybrids. The design is clever, they don't look overly chunky when you look down on them. Certainly no more than my previous Ping G25's.
The first thing is, they are sooooo forgiving. A bad hit is still okay. A really bad hit is still a really bad hit, but a bad hit is not a disaster. Phew. The thing is though, the face must have multiple sweet spots because I hit more sweet strikes than I have in a very long time. I could kid myself that I'm suddenly a great iron player, but I'm not that deluded
. The club helps off centre strikes.
When you hit it well, whooooaaa. It goes high, really high, and does it quickly. Then it lands softly, it's a thing of wonder. The noise is satisfying, as is the feel off the club face. The trajectory
. Does it give extra distance? Probably a little extra but not crazy amounts. I think we also know that may be sleight of hand with the lofts.
With these clubs, and the senior shafts, the trick seems to be to hit them slowly and smoothly, isn't it always? The easier I hit them, the better they went. The trick is to do that through the whole range.
It's a work in progress but initial results are hugely positive. These irons are designed to make the game more enjoyable. Based on the number of times I had an inane grin on my face today, they are definitely doing that. Highly recommended, well worth checking out
