Church Stretton golf course

Played it for the first time today in a Pro-Am and it chewed me up and spate me out big time.

Those who have played it in the wind will know all about it I've sure.

A course to be played once for sure .:D

I've seen it described as where golf meets fell walking! Not very long but pretty tough. Lovely scenery.

Re: Church Stretton golf course

It's one on my bucket list actually. I've a mate who lives in Shrewsbury, so may play it next time I'm down there. Does it start with 3 x par 3's?

Yes it starts with 3 uphill par-3's and also finishes with a very downhill par-3.

Re: Church Stretton golf course

The first is an impossible par three. We had to ask a member who was coming off the 18th where the hole was! It's not up a hill, it's the top of a huge bank. Impossible. 2nd hole was surrounded by sheep in the shade of the trees. 3rd again is almost impossible. After that, and your cards in tatters, it gets alot easier, but damned hilly. I played it in glorious sunshine. The stench of sheep poo was a little off putting to say the least. The 18th is a great nearest to the pin hole. Basically a flick with a wedge from way up high to a green below. Good fun ! Not really a "bucket list" course though.

It does, but you've missed out the adjective 'impossible'!

Really enjoyed my round there - fantastic views up on top, and it may even have been me who wrote that it's where golf meets fell-walking as that's certainly how I felt after my round

Re: Church Stretton golf course

Sorry Derek but the third is downhill, yes you walk up from the second to the tee, but the green is downhill.
I remember feeling knackered by the time I reached the 4th tee! I would imagine that playing that course on a regular basis would make you very fit. :)

Yup you go up again to the 4th tee. You can spot the members quite easily, skinny as a rake and whippet fast from the fitness they've gained :D

I think it's also the highest course in England IIRC? Unless you include Royal Allerton muni in Liverpool, which has a penchant for pot-smokers.:o

Re: Church Stretton golf course

I have never played it, but the typo in the thread title makes it looks like it has closed... Well it does to me :)

Re: Church Stretton golf course

Played it a few months ago in howling wind and horizontal rain. More like extreme sports than golf! No fairways as such, more like clearings in the bracken and heather!

I thought the fairways were rather nice when I played there, apart from being covered in sheep droppings that is. One of my drives actually hit a sheep on its backside. It jumped up in the air, but then went back to eating grass, so couldn't have been badly hurt. It did knock about 15 yards off my drive though. The sheep are/have to be pretty tough up there! :)
