One for the techies.

Looking to do a small trial using Dragon Dictate and a small screen size chromebook/laptop/netbook. Found this on Tesco and along with some vouchers it wont cost much.

System requirements from Dragon are
-RAM: Minimum 2GB for 32 bit windows, 4GB for 64 bit windows 7,8,8.1 and windows server 2008 r2 windows server 2012
-CPU: Minimum 2.2GHz intel dual core or equivalent AMD processor
-Free hard disk space 4GB

It will not be required to do anything else apart from transcribe /save/move/print the recordings

As far as I am aware, dragon software is not compatible with the chrome operating system.

On the specs it needs to say "Chrome OS"

There is a google app that does voice stuff, but it isn't dragon

You need a windows laptop with an Intel I3cpu
£350 ish from PC world sale section will do the job

Have checked out crucial but not sure of exact model of Lenovo G50???

There are a number of options for example G50 30, G50 45, G50 70.

Going to order extra RAM but want to make sure I order the correct one. Any idea of the correct model or will the RAM chip be the same???

What is the main benefit of changing the RAM from 4GB to 8GB...

Just out of interest....

Lenovo make all sorts of grades of laptop. The stuff for sale in the high streets is not good. The stuff from specialist/business outlets tends to be excellent.

I can't possibly see any dictation program requiring 8gb of RAM. That's just silly.
32 bit windows 'maxed out' at 4gb (less, actually) but most of the latest Windows are 64 bit, so you can install 8gb.

We (work) use Dragon and nobody has 8gb machines. All our desktops run on 4gb.

I am running an IdeaPad (Z series, rock solid, business not consumer) ... my RAM usage rarely reaches 50%.

I use SSD drives now in everything. Expensive but fabulous.

Probably best to wait till it arrives then use the Crucial tool to select the exact 4Gb Chip, but they are all about £25 with free delivery.

Re RGDave's comment, you cant compare bog standard laptops with SSD desktops, dont forget that laptop CPU's are turned down, so they produce less heat.
an SSD drive makes such a huge difference in machine speed that RAM is irrelevant as long as you have enough, here we are looking at a normal laptop hard drive, spinning at 5400 rpm, compared to a (normal not SSD)desktop spinning at 7200 rpm , thats a big difference and it needs all the help it can get.

The RAM isnt just running the dictation program, There is Windows itself, all the background stuff, antivirus, Office etc I've found that laptops with 8gb of ram are quicker and more responsive than those with 4

and for £25 quid, its a good cheap upgrade, but yes it is discretionary

Run the crucial scan on new laptop and ordered the suitable 4GB upgrade.

Now to keep my boys away from using it lol

This Acer Chromebook 11 is probably my pick now for sub $200 Chromebooks. The reason is that it has the nicest display (IPS) you'll see at this price point on any platform from any brand.This is not a full HD display but rather a lower resolution 1366x768 display. I can say that this has a powerful performance for its price. You'll never regret in getting this. I swear.
