I've just logged into hdid and seen ive been cut by 3 whole shots! I know I had a great round on Sunday, but still, it's a little daunting when you see it on paper... (or screen)

How the hell am I going to play to 13???? total re-evaluation needed now... GULP!

The handicap is like promotion, eventually you get to a point where you cannot perform... Your not there yet :)! So calm down and enjoy it.

Thanks guys. Just a bit of a shock really.

My par is 68, I had a great round, shot 72 for 12 under my handicap. 2 x 7's on par 4's too, so scary what it could have been..

Front 9 was 4 over (7 pars, one bogey and one treble).
Back nine level (4 birdies, 3 pars one bogey and one treble).

It wasnt spectacular though, it was just plodding along consistently, although there were a few good shots in there.

Ha, so you shot 4 over including 2 triples and you're worried about playing to 13?! :) Well done.

Firstly, congratulations

I had a similar cut earlier in the year and my first initial thought was exactly the same as yours and the honest answer is that it is all in your head. It took me a while to get used to my new h'cap. I have always believed I could get to 7 but believing it and having to do it take a bit of adjustment. I think I said before on here that playing off of 10 was a bit like having a comfort blanket as I knew that I could make up for mistakes. Without those 3 shots it was a bit like "what do I do now?" and I found myself thinking rather negatively on the course about my score. There was also an element of not believing I was a 7 handicapper until I had actually got a cut playing off of 7, another negative thought. I didn't want to think like this but golf does that to you. It probably took me 6 or 8 weeks to come to terms with it.

I went through a lot of things in my head during the transition period some of which may help, read on if I haven't bored you already :D ...

1) The holes I no longer got shots on I expected to par or birdie anyway so what's the big deal.

2) Stableford points aren't a good measure of my game. I worked this out during a bounce game when I had to play off of 6, I parred holes 6 to 11, a difficult stretch of holes, and had amassed a grand total of 13 points, somehow, those 6 pars seemed like they should be worth more than that. That was it, points are pants, I even stopped writing points on my scorecard and only recorded gross scores for a while. I stopped thinking ahead to holes where I could get 3 points and just thought about parring every one of them.

3) Once I stopped thinking about points I realised there was no point thinking about handicap. I went back to the way I used to think about golf in the early days before I knew about points, handicaps and Nett scores. The whole purpose was to shoot as low as I can.

4) You have to believe you can play to it. You must have played to it to get to that handicap so you know you can. You also have to remember that you aren't supposed to play to it, it is supposed to be difficult. Don't let the score be the deciding factor as to whether you played well or not. Think about how you actually played and where you dropped shots. I went up from 6.5 to 7.5 with a few buffers on the way and I can honestly say that in only one of those rounds did I play badly. I got some funny looks in the clubhouse when I came in with 31 points and told people I'd played really well but the reality was that I had for the most part. I had some bad holes, I knew I had to work on my bunker play and short game and I had to make better decisions but usually for 15 or 16 holes I played really well and once I cut out the mistakes I'd be fine.

I think I've waffled a bit there - sorry!!!

EDIT: 4 over gross off of 16 and you're worried about playing to 13. Ignore everything I just wrote, just jump on your horse and go play :D

Was your cut all calculated by the numbers of shots you were under the SSS? I also had a shock last night got cut 4 shots after Sundays comp 23 to 19. i shot 91 par 73 SSS 72 and had 2 quads and a treble so net 68 is 4 under handicap and then another 5 for holes over double bogey so i thought i would be cut 9*0.3 but it looks like i have been added another 2 shot reduction.

Would this be just because i had a good round?

dedpending on previous scores an ESR cut may have been applied.

OP thats great scoring, you should worry abot playing to 13 you actually played to 4!!!!! there is a potential argument that 3 shots is not enough???!!! :) same round again and you are still only 9 under handicap.

Well played enjoy the glow a round like that gives and hopefully the golfing gods dont get there own back too soon. :mmm:

It will be calculated based on the CSS. What was that?

Exceptionally scoring reduction, if you score -4 (I think) a couple of timesin quick succession Plus a few other factors the computer will recommendedan extra cut.

Thanks Hawkeye, that was a really good read, I appreciate you taking the time to give me a little insight into how you coped etc. (well, apart from the edit of course lol).

I'll have to see if it works for me, i especially like the part about not using points. I think that is a bit of a hang up for me, so will need a bit of work to change..

Again, thanks mate, much appreciated :)

reading the initial post I hastely assumed that an ESR kicked in - looking at things as presented a little more I wonder if 13 may just be temporary.....

superb shooting - well done. funny how the really good rounds feel like 'just plodding along' isn't it.

CSS was 72

What is ESR?

Based on what you have written I am assuming your adjusted score was actually 82. i.e. you shot a 91, but you had 9 shots taken off to be no worse than nett double bogey on those holes.

You therefore effectively shot 82. If you take your existing handicap off that then you got a 59.

59 minus CSS of 72 = -13 shots so you then calculate the reduction as 2.5 x 0.4 = 1 shot to move from cat 4 into cat 3 and then 10.5 x 0.3 = 3.15 so a total of a 4 shot reduction, i.e. was off 23, now of 19.

At least that is my take on it anyway.
