Chris Waddle is a MUppett!

I pretty much agree with Chris Waddle.

Beckham was a superb crosser of the ball and even better at selling shirts, pants, perfume and club merchandise.

A GREAT footballer, he was not.. Very good at what he was good at but pretty limited really. My brother in law is from Salford, is an OT season ticket holder (last 25 years) and is Man U through and through and he completely agrees. When the Man U team he figured in was in their prime, Beckham was the 4th best midfielder in their side after Keane, Scholes and Giggs. All much better than Becks but without the pop star wife and dream marketing looks.

A good player but great? Not in a million years...

Sorry imo Beckham was a great player in a great Man utd team.
I havnt read the article but Waddle says he wouldnt rate Beckham in the top 1000 premiership players.
Heads gone, too many pizzas following his ultra crap penalty.

Think he came runner up on 2 occasions for world player so he can't have been too bad. Doubt Van Nistelrooy would av scored half the goals he did for UTD if Beckham hadn't put em on a plate for him.

Find it hard to take anything Waddle says seriously....

What I will say for Becks is what 'talent' he had he used to the full which is all you can ask... Seen too many players, over the years, with 'talent' in abundance but couldn't be asked to deliver...

Waddle has a point, but typically exaggerates for effect.

Imo, Beckham was a great dead ball kicker and a very good crosser. Not a good tackler, only adequate passer. Positional skills were not great either.

England Captain probably more for his ever-positive approach than any other attribute - though that's pure speculation.

I'd certainly rate Giggs as the best footballer of that Man U crop. Keane was too nasty imo; I think Scholes balances hard-man with flair for that role better.

Absolutely correct Snelly

I'd also rate Giggs, Scholes and Keane as better than Beckham but to say he is outside the top 1000 for me is way off.

He is certainly in the top 1000 imo its not just about individual ability its about what he does for and brings to the team. The strikers there in his time couldn't have had anyone put the ball on the plate from a wide area better for them. If it was about pure individual skills the premier leagues been littered with those types that just do it when they can be bothered but Beckham always gave it 100%

I'd av to disagree, even if he was 4th best in that midfield (Wich is debatable) he was still a world class player IMO. Think people forget how good he was in his prime because of the whole "Beckham Mania". Check out some videos of him on YouTube,he was class!!!

Agree with this, spot on.

Many will remember Michael Owens wonder goal at France '98, and many have probably forgotten who had the vision and supplied the perfect pass - David Beckham.

He worked tirelessly at his game perfecting his passing and dead ball situations. In England games one of the things that has been missing the most are his penetrating corners and free kicks. No one since has come even close to what he used to do.

IMHO, anyone that had the bottle to take that free kick against Greece to qualify, and to execute it the way he did under the extreme pressure, deserves the title of a "Great Player".

he is one of the best crossers and dead ball specialists I have seen. He is also a big game player so for me is up there with the best.

thats from a Liverpool fan btw!

Agree. At the time Beckham was probably the 4th best midfielder in that side purely because of what he did within that midfield - at that time he was mainly used to provide the cross and take set pieces but without him Utd wouldn't have won what they did. Scholes is world class as is Giggs, Keane was an unbelievable leader, total dedication and also total class but Beckham developed his game into being a fantastic player, bordering on world class. OK he's a good looking bloke who has an ex pop star wife but his ability as a footballer in my opinion can't be questioned.

Is he a great? Well he certainly made the most of arguably some limited talent but no way he could have performed on a global stage for so long without being a game changer. Definitely not a legend in the Pele, Messi, Muller Cruyff mould but definitely a great player.

Some slightly bizarre replies here...to say Beckham isn't a great player because he could only pass, cross and deliver set pieces, without being any good at the rest, is naive. All footballers have their strengths and weaknesses. E.g. Scholes was great at shooting, picking a pass and holding the midfield together, but was diabolical at heading, dribbling and tackling.

You've got to look at his longevity, his influence on the field at club and country level, where he played and how he influenced football. Few, very few, can match what he has achieved.

But having said all that, he was a very good player, not great. :D ;) Very few are classed as great; DB isn't one of them.

I'd love to know what his stats are for how many assists he has had for goals over his career, i bet he is in the top 5 in the world.

Yes he couldn't tackle or have any pace but his vision and dead ball skills easily made up for it.

You also couldn't fault his commitment, he would do anything he could for the team he played for.

Very good but not a great for me, didn't do enough on the pitch that sticks in the memory and it so long since he did anything of note- 2 free kicks against colombia and greece, the sending off v Argentina, and that long punt against Wimbledon.
Dead ball he was at his best and a terrific crosser too but it ends there. Disappearing off to the US had no credibility. Was in the shadows and there to sell shirts for Madrid.
Did have a lot of heart and turned into a great role model once he became a father. Lots of respect for him but not a great.

Another thing he wasn't very good at was ducking 'boot passes' from the gaffer! Or at least which of the gaffer's passes to head!
