Back in the days when I played football, my annual expenditure was a new pair of boots. The only choice I had was which boot and invariably I'd plum for my favourites Copa Mundial in moulds and F50's in studs.

Golf on the other hand, hugely expensive and so many decisions to make when you start out and have a limited budget. DMD or hybrid, membership or pay as you play, new irons or lessons. I'm honing through the mill at the moment regarding what I should prioritise.

So that got me thinking. What's the best golf related purchase you ever made and how has it helped your game.

Has to be my membership at my current club. I got a lot more practice in as its closer than my previous club, got into bigger comps as club try and get everyone into these to represent the club and also made good friends with few people who also play of very low handicaps so can get a good few pointers off them :)

Im with Owen on this one...Joined our club in april last year.I snapped my achilles playing football in May and spent 12 weeks in a cast...Retired at christmas from footie and now im infatuated with golf...Happy Days :D :D

In terms of equipment, it has to be a 460cc driver, a rescue club and a gap wedge.
In all other ways, lessons...... :)

It has to be becoming a member at my club. We don't have booked tee times except for club competitions so you are free to rock up at any time and go out. Add in the competitions for getting your handicap cut (hopefully) meeting loads of new golfing parnters, the craic in the clubhouse, the practice facilities (home from home for me) and the chance to play a decent curse regularly and it seems a simple answer. The only downside of course is the cost and joining fee on top in the first year although the club are now waiving that for the first year and then allowing it to be spread over a couple of years to make the hit that much easier to take.

Joining a golf club first. Especially if there's no further green fees to pay. Practicing, especially the short game, and now being able to do it in the garden will only help. Which leads on to the wedges. The GW, and non iron set SW has helped. A putter that I always wanted has helped. Last but not least, lessons.

Having said all of that, the iPhone apps have helped. What with the video and frame by frame analysis of the swing has helped tremendously.

Also, testing some of the 'goods' has also helped no end. Oh, and the GPS!

I've been no help what-so-ever with regard to your question!

I think if you are brand new to the game then lessons would be ideal first. I came back into it after a break and so getting my club membership was more important as I had some capability of knobbling it around still

Hard one that.

Never got a club or set that really got my game to come on overnight. Lessons don't seem to really to help too much.

I think my video camera and tripod probably helped the most over the years.

Put your swing on camera for all shots from all angles. Sit at home on the TV for a good bit going over all the swings and shots and work things out for yourself. Thats probably helped me the most.

When I had a lesson or two years ago it was only to reinforce what i was thinking and getting other (professional) points of view which I added to my views with a pinch of salt.

You learn alot from watching yourself hitting different shots and when you work things out for yourself then you have a better understanding of the game overall, more importantly your game.

Got to be golf club membership.
£600 per year,100 rounds =£6 per round.
Plus playing in the competitions with all that entails.
Bargain of the year. :)

Getting my TopFlite Tour irons in '95. Made such a difference to my ball striking, coming from Howson DJ100's (think Slazenger!). Handicap dropped from 15 to 8 very quickly on the back of them. Don't forget - back then a lot of top Tour Pros played the Topflite Tour irons

How good were those irons!! I loved mine loads.
Would consider buying some today if they were still like that.

THere's almost always a 2nd hand (3rd even!) set on eBay.
Old technology now, even surpassed by bog standard brands, but in the day - they were good!

Without a shadow of doubt, my GoKart electric trolley. Played 18 in tough going yesterday (hilly course and very windy) but it was a doddle with the cart. Had I been carrying I would have been knackered by about the 12th hole and would have struggled over the closing stretch. As it was, I walked off the 18th as fresh as a daisy and could have played some more. Battery on charge now and all ready for another game tomorrow.
No question or hesitation. Best £200.00 I've ever spent.

Best item I've ever bought is my Powakaddy Robocaddy, it brings another level to your game. Just like a caddy only it dosent speak to you. I have a brand new one waiting on it's 1st outting this year. roll on April!
