No not with wedges......with diesel tuning boxes.

After looking around for a while and being nagged by PNWokingham, I have ordered a tuning box for my car. Had an Audi A4 remapped a few years ago and it made a big difference. It arrived today so will be fitting it tomorrow.

The car is a BMW 325D M Sport, going from 197bhp/400nm torque to 250/490 so should make a big difference on the road. And the best thing, it only increases my insurance by £20 a year :D

Anyone else tuned/chipped/remapped their cars?

D4S, what does this actually mean doing and what is the cost?

I drive a silver car which, I am reliably informed, is a 320D M Sport, so would consider this - although I am a bit old for such things.........

Oh, and I am not that technical when it comes to cars!

Cheers

It's very straightforward matty. I've bought a 'little black box' that quite literally plugs into a connector in the engine bay. According to the instructions, takes 10-15 mins to fit. The benefits are improved power and torque and....if driven sensibly....better fuel economy as well. These boxes start from as little as circa £50 and go up to several hundred pounds. If you are considering one, do a bit of research online, read the forums etc as you get what you pay for.

And yes...they work on silver cars too!! :D

£20 on the insurance is an eye opener for me, I would have thought they would have increased it enormously as its outwith the manufacturing specs in terms of power/weight ratio, suspension, tyres etc so I would assume their risk assessors would deem it a greater risk of accident, ergo claim.

Got me interested now

Yeah, I was shocked as well but a guy at work has played around with his Octavia VRS and made 3 changes and his insurance went up £40. So I got an online quote as my insurance is due for renewal on the 18th Dec. Standard it came out as £210, chipped it went up to £230 so seemed like a no-brainer to me.

car geek alert!!

Personally, i would steer clear of the black boxes you can buy online and take my car to a remapper. they will do a live map, no added hardware. they change the code on the ECU basically, there are quite litterally hundreds of these companies, some with a good reputation, some bad. do you research! but expect to pay £250-£500.

My last one i had done, was a 330d bmw, took it from approx 230bhp to approx 275bhp, but upped the tourque from 400NM to about 600NM IIRC.. so it went very quick, but also on a run, it did improve my MPG.

did it increase insurance as well?

What about 'Off a Run" ?

As mentioned above the tuning boxes do work but a remap is much more reliable. The tuning box just alters the signal to the injectors to pump more fuel in which will give more bhp/torque and even mpg if used properly. Some boxes do make the car show errors every now and again. A remap is often much better as it will be tuned specifically for your car using its own ECU and you will usually see better gains in torque bhp and mpg (if driven properly :P )

I map my own impreza and have a limited knowledge on diesels other than the fact they are really easy to map compared to petrols (essentially diesels need boost and fuel tinkered with, petrols need dozens more considerations to prevent lean/rich/knocky air fuel ratio related conditions).
Tuning boxes usually only bump fuel and not boost so yes they will give more power but at the expense of mpg, a remap can up both a little and give better results/mpg than a tuning box.

For what it is worth, I declare everything on my wrx as ultimately, if I have an accident/incident, I want my side of things to be crystal clear. I also have a like for like part replacement policy so if the car/parts are stolen I get the same/equivalent performance back rather than standard bits.

Okay brendy, spill the beans on re-mapping diesels.
I have a 300tdi 2.5ltr turbo in a Defender Wolf, and it needs to go faster, oh, and it's 24v if that makes a difference.

Slime.
