My chipping is at best adequate on a good day and just plain awful on a bad day. I often chunk them, blade them straight over the green (usually into deep trouble), or even shank them. During a long practice session yesterday I found that picking the club up a bit more steeply on the backswing helped quite a lot. I guess that I must have been swaying back a bit and moving the centre of my swing an inch or two back.

As a continuation of that, try putting about 90% of your weight on the left leg and, more importantly, keeping it there throughout the swing. Swaying can be a killer for chipping.

Fundamental of the linear method. Weight on front foot, ball forward (opposite left heel) and back and through and rotate onto the target

Although I posted this 4 yeas ago, I was teaching it for years before that.

Bobs video is very good. You should be trying to chip the ball under shaft on the basket, although it will go over.

For me the important things in chipping are:

Dont let the left wrist break down.
Short backswing and longer follow through.
Select the club that will give the correct pitch and run out.
Concentrate on the ball landing point more than the target.
Weight forward and use a little pivot.

I played with an old guy who I know used to be a very low handicapper until the frailties of old age and a stroke set in. Although his long game wasn't that good any more, he made chipping look effortless and easy, with his ball usually finishing close to the hole. I find chipping incredibly difficult and am usually happy if my ball ends up anywhere on the green. My handicap is only as low as it is because I putt from off the green if I possibly can! :(

You seem pretty open to different methods so I really suggest looking at the Gary Smith linear method. It uses the bounce and so eliminates the chunks and I do still get the odd thin (which is why I'm off to see Gary in a few week) but that's caused by a lack of rotation and I just need to get that squared with him. Making a huge difference to my short game and along with the pitching and bunkers I'm in a Homer happy place all things short game.

Even if you try it and it isn't for you, as there are a lot of moving parts what have you lost?

It has nothing to do with you swaying.

You are now bringing the club down on a steeper angle allowing you to make ball then turf contact. I suspect before you where swinging the club around your body too much, coming in too shallow sometimes causing fats, other times thin depending on how you were trying to help the ball into the air as you scooped.

Hitting down allows you to use the loft of the club to get the ball into the air.

I improved my chipping a lot by practicing off a door mat from B&Q. The result has been a lot of up and downs so far this season. Here's what I learned:
1. Weight on the leading leg.
2. Shallow swing path - let the loft of the club do it's thing
3. Swing path is straight back and straight through. This feels odd at first but the ball contact is much better.
4. Soft hands I.e. No active input- let the weight of the club be the power.
5. As an amateur I don't have time to practice chipping with lots of clubs so I limit my chipping to SW, PW and 9I.
6. The safe, go to club for chipping is the 9I.
