I know that it's legal to do but usually frowned upon
not a shot I've ever considered but looking back at some of the monster putts i've left myself over the season,
we have some double greens and a miss hit approach could leave a 40yd putt
I may start practicing with a hybrid or long iron then build up to a loftier wedge but only use it if it's a viable option :mmm:

I'm sure the purists may poo poo such a thought

Have you done it , confess your sins :D

I think a hybrid shot style putt is good, I see lots of people using this method on links courses, especially big undulating one's, you never get wristy and once you get used to the weight of the putting style I thinks its a clear winner.

I've done it, and would do so again.

However, only in a comp and only if the pin has been tucked somewhere such that I can't get near it along the ground and a chip opens up the possibility of getting closer.

i have chipped from the green ,it was on a kidney shaped green and i was at one end ,the pin at the other ,no direct line to the pin without going over a raised lump, got it pretty close too.
best thing was i was playing with our greenkeeper .

Good for you, obviously a stupid pin position or poorly designed green.

I have chipped on a green when it seemed like the best shot. No qualms.
I have also used a 4 iron for a checked jigger type shot when required for a long uphill put.

Not for me as I only ever play bounce games. So at the end of the day is not worth damaging the green IMHO. If I ever play in a comp and I am on for a level par round I may reconsider. But that scenario is a long long way away

I've done it once as it was really my only option of getting anywhere near the hole and I'd do it again if all other options are exhausted. It would have to be an absolute last resort though.

Chipped on the big double green on the front nine at the Forest of Arden

Personally I think the Original Poster should be horse whipped for chipping on the green, or even thinking about doing so! Greens should be designed so this is never necessary, but I have come across kidney shaped greens where you can be on the green, but have fringe grass or semi-rough between you and the hole. I always try to putt over such obstructions.

Would love to see a putt executed over semi-rough 😳
