Played A 4BBB yesterday and won 4&3. We decide to play the last few holes anyway as you do. I discover on the 16th hole that the chipper my oppo used on a few occasions was a double sided one. I pointed out to hin that he shouldnt have been using it as it an illegal club, his resposne was that we are not playing on the PGA tour..

I didnt want to get into a protacted discussion about it so left it there.

Had his team won and I had made the same discovery what would our claim have been?

The match?

An adjusted score based on the times I could remember him using it?

?

If he knows it's an illegal club then it's DQ, no question.
If the fact is pointed out during a round then
In match play its a max 2 hole penalty

In this case the match had finished, but cards not yet handed in, so yes an adjustment would have been required which could easily effect the result

Isn't it irrelevant as you found out after the conclusion of the match?

Taking that he had used the club, he should be disqualified.

Had he not used it when you noticed it was non-conforming on the 16th , you would complete the hole and determine the state of the match. Then you would deduct one hole for each hole at which he carried the club with a maximum of 2 holes. For example, if he was 2 up going down the 16th and won the hole making the state of the match 3 up for him, he would have to deduct 2 holes and the state of the match would then be that he was 1 up.

I hate this response when someone has been found to have had a Rules breach/cheating.

Well, the reply is simply 'So what! It's an illegal club so you are DQ-ed'!

Until that happens, it's likely he'll continue to use it. So you would have been doing his team a favour by pointing it out!

If such rules are going to be ignored - especially with that reason - then there's no point having rules at all!!!

I quite agree. No doubt it'll still be in the bag in the next match and he'll carry on immune to the fact he's cheating until he gets his tour card

I would quietly point it out to the comp secretary and get his bag checked on the 1st green in the next comp. So the club can guide him on the rules and DQ him so he understands it might not be the PGA tour but we still abide by the same rules or face DQ.

Would your club actually do that and check someones bag on the first? Not sure mine would. The handicap secretary may have a quiet word about it but I doubt very much anyone would go as far as looking at the bag next time out.

Yeah I cant imagine anyone wating on the tee to check his bag. I told him he shouldnt be using it, I cant really do any more.

Yes you can! You could/should have told him that it was against the Rules to have it in his bag when playing and that it was/is a DQ offence to do so!

And if the Team Captain was within earshot at the time, then I doubt there'd be a problem next time!

er i did tell him it was illegal and he shouldnt use it... I do what I can to uphold the rules of golf, while a huge number of people couldn't care less.

Your statement to him was significantly milder than many of the ones you make on here!

As I posted, pointing out the consequence of using the illegal Chipper - a DQ - in earshot of his team captain would have got the message across more effectively than saying he 'shouldn't' use it! As it was, the 'We're not playing on the PGA Tour' response was almost a predictable response!

I came here looking for a ruling. which I got. Perhaps you can complain about me if you feel that strongly about what I post.
