Saw that this was one of the "Hidden Gems" in the mag recently and was pleased that my Golf Society was due to play there, as its been on my hit list for a while.
Its a 5800 yard full 18 hole course, carved out of a huge area of woodland, Very hilly and with some narrow tree lined fairways.
The course is beautiful and was in very good condition despite the weather which was heavy rain and some hail, with the odd dry sunny bit, the greens were surprisingly fast, but true.
it is fair to say that It is a compact course, it has 3 crossover holes , a couple of quite short par 4's . and it gets very tight on the 8th green where you have to let the group behind drive off, whilst the 9th tee drives over the 8th green, you really do need eyes in the back of your head.
Most of the holes are lovely, very well designed and in a very pretty setting, but there are 2 that I did not like.
The par 3 8th is the hole that everyone talkes about as its only 155 yards, but it is about 50 yards above your head, its a bit Mickey Mouse, the distance from the Ladies Tee is only 58 yards.
The 18th par 4 is also not nice, it has a narrow split fairway, the lower left side filters you down to a fairway bunker whilst the higher Right hand side is only 20 yards wide.
Both holes are a bit of a lottery with potentially good shots not being rewarded.
It is a very challenging course both in terms of Golf and physically, some of the hill climbs are tough and I had to take some shots whilst out of breath in order to keep play moving, If I played it each week I would obviously get used to it, but for the Golfer not used to hills, its a cardiac arrest waiting to happen.
I hope we play there again next year, as it is a lovely course, the facilities are supurb and the welcome friendly
