I'm playing a golf comp between my work and a rival company on Sunday and Monday next week so to prepare I've booked a round at re course to go and see how it's playing and familiarise myself with the course.

Is this cheating (in the spirit of fair play) or just good preparation?

Oh and to make me feel better about having no hamstrings left from laying laminate flooring in the conservatory yesterday I'm gonna have to pop to mcdonalds for a muffin on the way :):) happy days!

Good preparation :)
End of story

Not cheating at all.
You could go out and set a course record during your "practice" round but play so badly during your "competitive" round that you may decide to sell the clubs and take up hillwalking.
Golfs like that
;)

It's not such a daft question as it first seems. ;)
In the olden days when me and Leftie started playing, it was considered cheating to even practice

A reccy mission is a good idea as you can report back as th whether the bacon butties are of a reasonable standsrt. I did one before the forum vs GM staff match at The Jubilee and it worked a treat.

I'm not sure it really helps.

I often play well away from home, on courses I don't know. Every hole is a new challenge, with no history.

Say you recce it, and birdie the first two holes. Does that set expectations? Say you 'only' par them in the comp, is that going to make you think 'but I birdied them last time, so I am not playing as well?'

Or the opposite. Say you have a train crash hole, where there is no obvious way of playing it any better. Would that dwell in your mind as you play the preceding holes.

I quite like going in cold. But may be because mentally, I'm a bit soft.

I like to play a course first, not to make a plan but simply to see what the course is like so I know what I'm going to face on the day. That said I have no plans to see Cooden Beach before the upcoming forum meet.... ;) ;) :p [/big-fat-lie]

Not sure it sets any expectations as we all know every day is different, certainly at our level and so I'd use any practice I could. I think it is a definite help to have played on the greens to get an idea of feel and how they play, as well as things like how much sand is in the bunkers, any local rules, etc

I consider it bad sportsmanship to take a practice swing out on the course.

I feel the same way about my opponent three or four putting.
But I enjoy watching it all the same

You'd of loved watching me today... 3 putted atleast twice. :D

Glad I did play the course today, cheating or not... It was a big eye opener to how it's going to play on Sunday.

The apple sauce in the pork nap after the game was a bit weak though...
