Hi, played in a team matchplay comp, inter club, an opponent was seen to intentionally kick his ball, which he admitted to, what is the penalty

First Penalty is 1 shot for moving his ball at rest , if he didnt replace it , it would be loss of hole ..

If he admitted it id be calling in the team captains & reporting it and id also be reporting it to the relevant golfing union...

How did it pan out ??

A suspension or dismissal should be the only solution to cheating.

You would hope no more team selection for that club ever and possible/likely further action internally regarding his membership as he embarrassed/hurt the reputation of the entire membership he was representing in the match.

The penalty in the match depends on a couple of things, did he play the ball from that new improved position? Loss of hole for improving lie/playing from wrong place (also the option for DQ for a serious breach which this sounds like)

Ignore above re improving lie (its causing ball to move /potential playing from wrong place), its difficult to know what to apply as the rules aren't really written with blatant cheating in mind. Closest they really get is with the committee discretion to DQ mentioned earlier

I'd go with rule 1-2 which prohibits taking action to influence movement of the ball. The way it's written presupposes a deliberate action on the part of the player. Penalties are loss of hole in matchplay and two strokes in strokeplay, but in both DQ for a serious breach. And the note quite clearly defines a serious breach as an action which allowed the player to gain a significant advantage. Kicking a ball to a new position clearly is such.

(Unless one kicked it into a worse position than its original that is - but that would be pretty crappy cheating l think)

Plus implementing all the stuff about banning from team etc but that is a "management action" rather than rules

Did he kick it out of anger, a bit like throwing a club, or to improve the balls position? Different scenario's in terms of the person going forwards. Same penalties but one is frustration that they know, and don't care, will DQ them or lose the hole whilst the other is cheating.

We had a Cat 1 player who was known for this kind of thing. He was eventually kicked out of the midweek roll-up having been caught doing it and it got to the point where no-one would play with him so he left.

When we found out where he had joined (some 15 miles away), some really dodgy journalist managed to let slip the story of his history at our place to the new club ...... ;) karma eh?

I think this is covered in Rule 18.2a (i) "touches it purposefully"
= one-shot penalty.
& "must be replaced"

It's rather against the spirit of the game and a word in the team captains' ear would definitely be needed.

But you have to assume he just lost his cool this one time and will learn from the mistake and continue being respectful/gentlemanly.

Having spent many years figuring out how to avoid temper tantrums I actually feel a lot more sympathetic to those who get the rage... I wish none of us did, and that we could just laugh off being a bit useless at this game more often than we'd like...
But, it's just not that simple.

A response I can wholly agree with ................... meltdowns really can be destructive.

As much as I don't condone deliberately cheating in any sport,
I do sometimes wonder if at times we lose all perspective when it comes to amatuer golf.
It seems for some the stigma lasts a lifetime, even convicted criminals are given a second chance or the crime removed from their record after so many years, caught cheating on the golf course and it's a life sentence.

'I'll pretend that that was a mistake - but I claim the hole and do that or anything similar again and I'll report you for cheating and seek a disqualification. I'll also mention your 'mistake' to your team captain and request that you don't play in any interclub matches again'
