as thread title I dont want to shell out for anymore Apple products and this iPod equivalent will be used for music and games for the wee fella.

I know nothing about Android or the pro's n con's so looking for options please? Ta

Any android device will do as they all perform the same storage and basic functionality, most have a micro sd slot so you can buy a cheap unit and bump up the storage with a spare 8 or 16gb slot.
If you want to game then you would need to buy a slightly better device.

Amazon is filled with unbranded stuff, have a trawl through there as some of them are samsung/apple/sony copies. Make sure it has a decent resolution and processor.

presuming you're after a tablet, have a look at the nook hd+.

It's a bit like the amazon fire thingy - an android tablet marketed by a book company (in this case Barnes and Noble) with a proprietry front end but standard android underneath.

You can get a 32gb one from John Lewis for £150 or 16gb for £130 (JL give free 2 year warranty). Has an SD slot as well. Lovely big screen.

As with a few of these, you can get the standard google playstore apps on easily enough, but need a little more dexterity to sideload things that google doesn't want you to use (eg flash). I've managed it though, so although it takes a bit of effort it's not impossible. With Firefox and flash installed I find it quite useful for watching sports streams (eg the golf) from sources other than the original...

guys, thanks, but its something like the ipod but not an ipod, literally music and the wee fella playing games on it, £130 is too much for just that, might even just disable an old iPhone and use that

i bought a refurbed ipod touch directly from apple this time last year.

Worst decision ever. Had dodgy wifi, took it to local apple service centre and have since had 4 all with different faults. Even the one I have now has a dicky screen, just can't be a****d to take it back again. I think they have a bucket of duff ones and then keep recycling them without repairing them until the original guarantee runs out.

do they play APPS?

cheers

For the most part they won't play Apps but then neither will most iPods (unless you mean iPod Touch and then it's a slightly different kettle of fish).
If you want it to play music and videos only then a MP3/MP4 player would suffice. If you want Apps then you would probably be looking at an Android phone (minus the phone capability - disabled) or a small tablet.
Others may have a different view and know more but from all I can think of those would be the options.

This is "like" an iPod - not an iPod Touch though.

whats your budget? You could get a 7 inch android tablet for 60 to 70 quid.

Or do a Google for portable media players and that will turn up a hole bunch of stuff.

This was written about 2 months back

The important point he makes is all these iPod touch alternatives use old versions of android, leaving a lot of compatibility issues.

Your best bet would be to look at a budget tablet, most of which are around £100, could probably pick up a second hand one for cheaper

I'd personally avoid anything cheaper than these as I have seen first hand just how nasty some of these can be

ok thanks all, some good options and alternatives, I agree about the real cheap jobs but I was looking to pay about £100 max as there is a potential it will be lost/damaged/ignored within a few weeks:whistle:
