A few of us have booked to play all three courses at Gleneagles next July, we had a quote from Golfbreaks of £1300 for the three days and three rounds, after doing some further digging and deciding to play after 3pm each day we managed to get the entire trip for £400 each including accommodation....result!!

Just wondered if anyone had played there and could offer us some tips based on their experience, thanks in advance

Keith

I've played the Queens and the Kings. Played the Kings on Friday and it was in stunning condition. Both are beautiful courses and the greens are something else. Be prepared that the round will take around 4.5hrs (which for some reason upsets some people).

You will absolutely love it.

That's a really good price. I was in the area once on business and kind of last minute asked how much a round would be on my own teeing off late on Sunday afternoon. They came back with something like £180 (plus club hire of something like 55 quid), but if there was 2 of us we could play for £150 for both as there was an offer on. I did point out that the weather forecast was not great, I am on my own and 2 for 150 or one for 180 makes no sense, I would not be holding anyone up or taking up a tee time they could sell otherwise as there were a lot free, and could they do something a bit more reasonable. But they could not.

To be honest this did not leave the best impression as I felt they were profiteering in the run up to the Ryder Cup. So I played The Rosemount at Blairgowrie instead for 30 odd quid including club hire I think, which I had mostly to myself. It was a gorgeous course and great club, really friendly. And I was kind of glad the actions of Gleneagles meant I ended up playing there.

Having said all that 400 notes including accommodation is a great deal so well done there. May be they are finally realising, much like the K Club did, that staging a Ryder Cup does not mean you can get away with charging silly prices as eventually people will go elsewhere.

I found that playing as a four ball after 3pm works out at around £60 each, they wanted £75 per night just for the evening meal at the Gleneagles Hotel so we ended up booking a 4 bedroom self catered apartment close to the Queens course....gives us more money to spend on beer :)

£400 for 3 rounds and accommodation is a bargain compared to their usual prices! We had a brief look at playing there next year when we're also doing St Andrews but the website showed it as £185pp for non residents so we didn't even bother phoning up to try to barter them down.

I'm assuming that the digs aren't through Gleneagles themselves?

**Edit** Just seen the special offers part on the website, can do 2 balls after 4pm for £170.... humm, this might be back on the table!

No, we booked the accommodation through Hotels.com and its only half a mile from the Gleneagles hotel, this is the info we got when we spoke to them at the hotel regarding playing:

Queens course after 4pm - £280 per four ball (£70 each)
Kings Course after 4pm - £280 per four ball (£70 each)
PGA Course after 3pm - £380 per four ball (£95 each)
Accommodation for three nights £110 per person

Total: £345

You'll love it. Gleneagles is a beautiful part of the world, and for a golfer its even better. As per above, the courses are in great condition just now. I played the PGA last month and playing Kings this Sunday.
Make the most of the practice area, especially if you have later tee offs.
Try and walk through the underpass to the PGA - its where the players came through to the 1st tee in the RC - quite a goosebump moment.
The staff are wonderful and really look after you.
Although your not staying, I'd recommend some post/pre round grub and a pint of Guinness beside the open fire in the Dormy House.
Yes its expensive when you get there, but you guys have done it the smart way and saved beer tokens already
For eating/drinking out there are plenty of wee places close by in Aucherarder
Have a great trip !

Thanks Crawfy, some great advice there and we will definitely act on it, I think if I break 100 I will be pleased!! We were thinking of getting a caddy for one of the rounds....just for the crack really, can anyone recommend this or is it not worth bothering?

Definitely back on our hit list now!

I think it's personal preference on the caddies, as the courses are straight forward enough to navigate well without one - although it would be a cool addition to the trip.
Its not like playing The Old Course, where a caddy will help you with the course 'secrets', for Gleneagles its pretty much all in front of you ( if that makes sense)
I personally have never hired a caddy (although I will when I play The Old Course some day) but have seen many visitors use the guys at Gleneagles.
I bet they have a few stories to tell too....

ps When you get there, check if they are doing your bag tags on the PGA. Since the RC, they are doing a cool thing wherein once you tee off they engrave your names on the back of the enamel RC bag tags, then deliver them to you when you are out on the course.

Enjoy...and bring extra cash for the pro shop !

Nice touch, thanks for the info crawfy, a friend of mine played the Old Course earlier this year and he got a caddy, he said it was a good experience but was baffled when he didnt rake his bunker, turns out you had to pay £1 per bunker if you wanted the caddy to rake them, ha.

When I first read this I thought you were playing shortly. You'll never get round in daylight was my thinking, what a waste. Thankfully I re-read it and see you are playing in July. What a blinder. If Carling did golf trips..................

The way you have done it has given me food for thought. Very clever playing at those times. A good way to play expensive courses, that offer this type of tee off time, for a more reasonable price. Thanks for posting.

Great post, I will be definitely looking into it myself now

As for the above post about the Old Course and their caddies, firstly it depends on the caddie you get and secondly, they rake your bunkers...there was no extra charge. We played there this year as a fourball and all took caddies, 3 of them were good and 1 was terrible, but they all raked bunkers, even the bad caddie

Next time I will ask for Ollie, the caddie that wrote the book

I played the PGA a week past Saturday, they've cut the rough down now from the RC, and unfortunately they've taken the disc up where Donaldson hit the winning shot, as too many where playing from that position.

The views around the first nine are stunning, literally 360. I was fortunate enough to play with the Captain of the Ryder Cup year and we played off the whites which was good and the greens are great. I really like the layout of the PGA (shooting 1 under par helps like) and practise facilities are immense, Take advantage of that.

As for caddies I was told its £45 to hire from the caddy master then there is a minimum tip of £25 to your caddy. So not cheap.
