North Luffenham is an army base now and Cottesmore us now Kendrew Barracks. Sadly no RAF in Rutland anymore

Yeah I know - Luffenham is were we used to our 3 day MFT exercise during basic ! Awful memories !!

Re: Honesty box

A whole 3 days of it? :ooo:

This was back in the early 90's when we weren't really proper military and more about the trade training

Our basic was only6 weeks long - my trade training was 18 months

Now basic is about 12-16 weeks and trade is about 8 months -tells the story of the dumbing down of skills in the trade and more emphasis on the soldiering !

I was an Army Apprentice, so a two year combination of trade and military training.

I think we have gone off topic a bit :D

Spent my final 5 years there, reasonable 9-hole course on the airfield. Could get 6 holes in at lunchtime. Nothing wrong with Luffenham, and nearby Luffenham Heath is a decent course.

We never did MFT training in the Navy. Nearest thing was a run ashore in Union Street, Could get pretty tough in the Pussy Cat Club.

Beat it girls, these undercrackers have been on for about a week, certainly scarier than anything the junior service have to offer

Agree - we can all reminisce about how great life was in the RAF in hotels by the beach whilst the Pongos slummed in the hills in a bivvy :D

In fairness the 22 years I spent in the RAF were brilliant - lots of highs and lows , thrills, dramas , scary moments , emotional times , satisfying times - it taught me life and I wear my veterans badge with pride.

At time the military get some bad press (mainly because of decisions politicians make )but we as a nation should be proud of them.

I remember coming back from one tour of Afghan and rushing home to see HID ( was a day early ) , I popped into Morrisons to get some plonk and a bunch of flowers - I was walking around in my Deserts and some kids saw me and said to their dad - "look it's a soldier" ( gave him a clip round the ear because I was RAF :D) and then said "I want to be just like him when I grow up" - that gave me a great sense of pride that kids still wanted to be in the military and the well dones I got from the staff showed that we still had some pride in our military.

It's awful seeing it cut to shreds by politicians but it always amazes me how the job still gets done despite the cuts

Re: Honesty box

Try three days on patrol in Helmand and reconsider that remark!

Try a week, but I reckon I've had harder long weekends on the sauce in Blackpool than the RAFs basic training exercise. Do you really want a battle of my dad is bigger than your dad?

It is a touhg life Phil. The Libyan conflict was a right old chore for 5 1/2 months. They made us stay in a place called Kapitola in a hotel located on the cliffs above the beach............... what a good choice I made when I decided to fix Aircraft for a living.........

Re: Chat about the military from the honesty box thread

during my 7 years I stayed in some right crap holes, Bosnia was probably the worst closely followed by a tent in the middle of the Saudi desert cooking for 40 blokes on a No5 petrol cookset!!! Jeez it was hot.
