Morning all

My wife and I currently drive around in a 54 plate Megane Diesel 1.9dci - it's a good car, auto lights, auto wipers, keyless entry/start etc etc etc. It's done nearly 95,000 miles, we get 44-48mpg between fill ups and the only issues we've had with it where when we bought it about 4 years ago but since then its been plain sailing.

Also, worth noting we drive our 10 month old boy around.

My Mrs has just got a job in a private school starting in January and part of the deal is a free place there for little 'un (I'm over the bleeding moon about this), anyway, I digress.

The job is about 26 miles away with 99% of the journey being on an A road where the speed limit is 40-60 the whole way, so a combined 52 miles per day....... with the added mileage we're looking at changing the car so need something to fit our brief above.

We've got £6k to spend (assuming a £1k part ex on ours).....what do you buy? go!

Your current car is reliable, you like it and gets pretty good fuel economy. I'm failing to see why you want/need to change?

Trying to pre-empt the problems era of a car....its nearly 10 years old, done a fair few miles already with another 1000(ish) to be added every month.

Apart from some consumables, what else goes wrong on these..?

Anyway, common sense dictates another Megane.

If you're wanting a change I'd suggest a Skoda Octavia, like this one...

There's a reason taxi drivers use the PD engined ones. I've seen some with more than 280,000 miles on them running the original engine and gearbox.

If I were you I would stay away from another megane, I know the one you have has been good to you but good Renaults are rare. Normally a lot of electronic problems as I have found out with my megane 1.5 DCI. Skodas are great engines as they are built by VW but because of this they are expensive for parts, you will also be able to pick up a good Vectra or Mondeo for that price which will be cheap to run and if anything does go wrong with it then it will not break the bank to fix.

The Skodas look like 'proper' cars these days and uber reliable.

You were lucky with your present car, French cars are the worst performing and worst for 'issues' according to most polls

After buying the car I heard the horror stories....but literally the only problems we've had were resolved by changing glow plugs and evicting a mouse and 2kgs of nut cases from our airbox. Apart from that its been a pleasure to own the Megane.
