Anyone recently done it?? I've got it in my head that I want a change, possibility in to accountancy. Started a course when I was about 18/19 but was pretty irresponsible at the time and ended up sacking it off and going to the pub instead and have always had it in the back of my mind that I should have given it a proper crack. Not sure at 35 and the state of the jobs situation that this is a good idea. Ideally I'd stick with my job for now and study at home or evening classes (if possible) and then try move into an accountancy/finance job to gain experience and on the job training.

Obviously I don`t know your salary but have you thought about a school business managers job. You don`t need an accountants qualification and if you took a role in a primary school you could train on the job with support from the local authority finance team. Could then lead to further qualifications and perhaps a role in school finance auditing in the future or a further role at authority level.

Depending on your current salary it might not be a viable option

Cheers moonpig I'll have a look into that - and my wife's a primary school teacher. I don't earn loads but couldn't take a drop in wage at the moment.

I did it in January, left a decent job for a bigger challenge that if it works out will be far better in the later years.

Becomes very hard to decide when you have family and budget to make each month

Go for it , you only live once as they say

School business manager in a medium sized primary you would be looking at starting on around £21,000 with a top end looking at around £26k. This is working with a budget around £ 1 million per year. Moving into secondary school then you are looking between £30 to £40k but obviously you are dealing with larger budgets and therefore more likely to need an accountants qualification.

You know when you used hear people say 'I wish I'd done more/better at school' when you was younger - if only I'd listened!! It is difficult especially like us that have a young family, just want to do better both career and salary wise.

on a serious note it is never too late to learn. im a time served plumbing and heating engineer. but due to some issues i needed to have a rethink. 4 years later back refreshed and now got a BSC.:whoo:. no more to the story but dont be scared to change or get different qualifications

Good for you. I'm well up for it and really want to do it but just need to get my arse in gear and knuckle down and do it.

just a thought but if your a safe job just now STAY, the UK will get worse. i reckon there are more civil servant jobs still to get pumped. more folk with less dosh to spend. and at the moment there are loads of small guys going out the game. perhaps look into doing end of year accounts/bookkeeping for the self employed as a sideline.

LGO pension is still good, I would think twice before changing if it is for financial reasons.
If it is for reasons of fulfilment or happiness, go for it.
My daughters circle of friends at university are all working at jobs that have no connection with their studies.
She trained as an accountant and quit 5 years in to buy a village shop, sold that to start an internet business which she sold to a major US company to ease then into Europe. Worked for them for a few years and has now started a childrens entertainment franchise which seems to be going well. Never a dull moment with her!!

go for it, I changed from being a chef for 13 years to working in IT then after a change in personal circumstance aka the ex dropping me in it I moved into telecomms. 5 years down the line and recently turning 40 I have to say it was the best move ever!

good luck

Cheers guys, some useful and thoughtful info/advice. I need to motivate myself now to get on a make a difference.

Someone asked what my motivation is - think its all 3 - financial, happiness and fullfilment plus a drive to better myself, just hope it all works out.
