After my recent trip to the Belfry and my upcoming visits with you lovely folk to Sunningdale and St George's.

Me me and the bro are looking at continue our good 12 months of courses a little better than our usual standard.

They have some good deals for April ATM but due to time constraints will only be able to get the two rounds in. One will of course be the 2010.

So folks, Montgomery or Roman Road?.

Hi All, long time lurker, first time poster.

My brother and I played the Roman Road last week. We both very much enjoyed it. Lots of up and down compared to my normal course and found it to be quite hard work (probably because I'm not very good). Course was in good condition with some tricky holes and the greens seemed very good.

Didn't stay at the hotel but the service at the club house, pro shop and bar are exactly what we expected.

The original "Wentwood Hills" holes on the Monty are good, some of the stuff on the back 9 are in fills... views as said, are great. A tough walk though, so big marches between holes where the re-routing happened. Celtic Manor do not allow buggies off the cart-paths at anytime, which might influence your choice. Some holes were hacked ... eh the 5th used to play as a strong par 4, now plays short to a new green and the 6th is a par 3 to the original green. (shame!)

The Roman Road is a better overall course (in my view) as was built as a single course so flows better. Views are not as good... but a slightly easier walk.

I live locally.... the Members disagree about which they prefer too. But all the courses are well kept....but parts get wet in winter. I think they both have their merits.... If you can get some good deals to go, its well worth it...

I worked there on the Golf Team for a couple of months last year while between contracts and played quite a bit. The 2010 is very good, not easy, but there's plenty of space and you can see what to avoid.... greens are big, slopey and quick (usually!)

I also wonder why more folk who visit South Wales don't play the old parkland courses around Newport and Cardiff.... some are excellent - eg Newport GC, Radyr, for example... or a little further west you have Southerndown, P&K and of course Royal Porthcawl. The back 9 at P&K is worth the trip on its own and Porthcawl is bloomin marvellous!

Hi, I would choose monty over Roman road. A much more enjoyable course. Do not take a buggy, you are often a good walk away from your ball and end up carrying 3 clubs with you.
Agree with other comments about other courses. Royal Porthcawl is awesome, Radyr is always nice, only 20minutes away from Celtic Manor.

Due to work and family (young kids, so school runs). Our trips away are only short. Travel and play, play next morning and travel back.
So ATM just trying to tick a few well know courses off for the experience.

Hopefully will have longer trips in time and play more in the area.

Great winter offer for 1 round on the 2010 and 1 night b&b from £87.

Weve managed to get bacon baps before both rounds and 2 course meal after play No once on 2010 and once on roman for 220 in April which I thought was decent.

Just gotta be hopeful for decent weather.
