Booked a stay at celtic manor for 2 nights with 3 rounds, 2 on the roman road and 1 on the montgomerie, its for my 18th, really looking forward to it, does anyone know any info about either of the course, maybe more about the montgomerie as there isnt much about it on the website.

cheers

Stayed and played there last autumn. Played the 2010 and the Montgomerie. Chucked it with rain and blew a gale whilst we played the 2010, which made it a bloody tough round. The sun came out when we played the Montgomerie. Recommend using a buggy on the Montgomerie, it's very hilly, and there are some loooong walks between green and next tees. Certainly wouldn't want to carry around it, other than that, I liked it, nice parkland course with some tricky holes and a few deep bunkers out there. Enjoy yourself, especially if the weather's good.

i past Celtic Manor last week when i was working down that direction and it looked awsome, the hotel with a massive Wales flag flying out in front looked the part, the courses looked quite hilly tho, is that correct?

The 2010 is pretty flat except for the last four holes.

The Monty is a hilly nightmare that imo is unplayable without a buggy. (and I hate buggies).

The facilities are second to none, the courses are decidely average, although I haven't played the Roman Road which is meant to be the best.

I played both courses in the middle of April for my 18th :) and thought they were amazing. Montgomerie was very hilly and after a 9 hour drive i never played well so i got to see the whole course which was a bonus but not while i carried my bag . The Roman Road is still quite hilly but a bit more tighter on certain holes and a bit longer than the Montgomerie course. Overall greens were good on both courses and fairways were running, you will have a great time even if you play like a donkey :D

When will you be staying?

Like some of the posts have said the Montie is a hilly course and you may want to take a buggy but your young and should be ok with a trolley, I have never used a buggy on there myself and I am 45.
There are some tight driving holes where position is key, most of the bunkers are pot bunkers. The greens have some very tricky reads and you can three put with ease if your in the wrong position. 17 is drivable if you hit it up the right hand side and get a good bounce. The only water is on the 10th hole.
You will have a great view of the 2010 from the 3rd green.

The Roman is a lovely course, Driver is not always needed as position can be better than length on some holes. It's not as hilly as the Montie but the 4th and 9th are uphill.
More than enough tricky greens and there is water on 14 and 15. Some par 5s reachable in two if the wind is with you but be happy with par if it's against you.

Have a good stay and if you have a snack in the lodge try the 'lodge burger'. If you have a meal in 'Rafters' you are in the 2010 clubhouse and you may be able to have a look around, may be.

The squire.
