Yesterday, I had a day off, weather too bad to play so I switched on Sky Sports, they showed "highlights" of the Spoony Classic!
What is the point?
Who wants to watch "celebrities" ex-footballers and there hangers on hack around a course?
The most annoying part was the motorised buggies they used, mini - replica Hummers....the golfers looked like pimps!
Back in the 70s they had pro celebrity golf on BBC2, and that was fun, not this posturing preening bunch of.......arrrgghhhhh

There better for the course than normal buggies due to the weight being spread about the buggie.

I want one ;-)

I too turned it off, I don't mind watching celebrities who can play but to see a bunch of rubbish celebrities who are all probably members of Loch Lomand, or La manga, sunningdale etc hack around a course patting themselves on the back for being jolly good media darlings frankly makes me sick. oh and jealous.

celebrities? I knew a few of them mostly the footy guys. But I never even heard of sponny..let alone the rest...who was the guy who came last? he got more coverage than a touring pro!

Classic it wasn't.
It made the solhime cup look good....

It depeneds on who is playing and whether they are actually a true celeb or someone who got famous on the back of something (BB, Strictly etc). I don't like the big hummers at all and think they should go straight into golfs room 101.

I saw bits of the Spoony event and thought it was alright. Most of the guys were clearly there for a bit of fun and so as long as plenty of money for good causes is raised its been a worthwhile day.

If any of you have ESPN sports, look in the listings for the Classic channel as they have been showing pro celebrity golf recently. The Bing Crosby trophy was on the other afternoon, Tony Jacklin and Sean Connery against Johnny Miller and some American actor. It was great fun and brought back some good memories.

I use to love the pro-celebrity on a sunday evening as a kid. It use to be on about 9.00pm and so my parents would let me watch it before going to bed. When I was the assistant at Wimbledon Common, I sold James Bolam the shoes he wore on the programme. Didn't do him any god as he had a mare.

ed. When I was the assistant at Wimbledon Common,

Homer, My father played at Wimbledon Common many moons ago and I used to go and caddy for him when I was young lad. That was in the days when the par 3 first was in fact the old 18th, and the 2nd near the clubhouse was the first, never did understand why they change it, but this would long before your time, back in the mid 60's
Cant actually remember many of the holes now, obviously their was the ravine hole that went down to the London Scottish club, and I can remember I think the 3rd that went at an angle across a bridal path, and of course you had to wear a red top.

I actually used to work (1972 to 1976)right behind the clubhouse in 19a Camp Road, my boss and the accountant used to often pop into the 19th for a swift pint.

funkfred,

Memories!!!!! My dad was a member up until the early 70's and use to play the current 2nd as the original 1st. Made much more sense being next to the putting green and a long par 4 to get people awy on rather than waiting for the green to clear on the first and the walk over there.
