Doing the ironing earlier today whilst Missis T was doing the finances (kept out of way), about 1.00pm there's a knock at the door and stood there was a policewoman.
She asks if we could check the cars to see if they have been broke into (No). She explains that the dog squad caught a thieving scrote last night after he was disturbed. As she is going I asked Missis T to check our CCTV. lo and behold, 10 mins before he was arrested, there is said scrote walking up to my car and checking doors, up to both garages and checked both doors, then checked Missis T's car doors. You cannot see his face but the clothes he was wearing matched what he was caught in when he only went to one house down the street.
god forbid how I would of felt if my bats had gone missing out of the garage.
The CCTV from Maplins has paid for itself.

Glad to hear the wee scrote was caught, car crime is absolutely hateful as it can take away someone's independence and the majority of the time involves the victim losing out financially.
Ref cctv paying for itself, not sure about that is it didn't put them off, quality was poor enough that it could be anyone and you never realised at the time of the crime.
All isn't lost tho, a lot of these systems from Swan etc include a pager alarm, if you enable that and get it working (good luck as most are pants), you would at least he warned and get the police on the go.

Brendy, I was talking to daughter about an hour ago re this ( she is a policewoman) I mentioned about having another CCTV discreetly put in front of garage door to help identify people, and she mentioned about it being prominent so scrotes see it. I did say if they know it's there will they will keep away. Is that the point to keep them away or identify them. Lord knows.

My nephews car got stolen from there front door yesterday some wee bawbag had been checking the cars as my nieces lads brand new Audi RS6 avant had some lovely finger prints all over the handles,hope they catch him and soon

I have an IP Camera, but its in the garage... We use it to keep an eye on our rabbits when we are away.. Thought about getting a couple more for the front of the house, not sure on the rules for filming at the front.. It would probably catch the neighbors kids are always kicking balls in the road and hitting cars, they never learn...

I have worked in the security game for 20 years installed 100's of systems.Like all things you get what you pay for.Cctv and intruder alarms won't stop anybody that wants something you have got.
CCTV require good lighting, the scum bags all in black with hats on and hoods up will be very hard to ID.Problem is unless you watch it 24/7 it's always after the event.

The system is from Maplins, and it is a good 6-8 yr old but works a treat. Sentinel or summat like that

there has been half a dozen times where it has been invaluable.

went to Maplins yesterday to look at putting another couple of cameras onto system, one in garage and one outside. But we were shown another system which records straight onto your smart phone via an app. I will end up doing one or the other.

There's a house on our dog walking route that has a CCTV pole next to his house with, I can only guess at a motion sensitive camera, as it's like one of those you see on street corners, in a globe, opaque top with transparent black bottom. Big sign up saying smile you're on camera.

I've toyed with the idea of putting some IR ones up as the back of the house is nigh on in complete darkness, but there's nowt in my back garden worth nicking, unless the thief has a penchant for the hot chillis in my green house.

My club extended the car park CCTV (showing on screens by the bar) to cover the external doors to the office and pro shop. The new ones are on after the doors are locked and are well concealed. If someone approaches the area they are asked to "Smile at the camera, please state your business and we will deal with it in the morning"

Personally don't really see the CCTV as being a deterrent to most thieves unfortunately. The real pros won't bother their backside about them as the pictures from them are usually horrendous. Even some of the CCTV images you see on crime watch in the big banks and jewellers and ridiculous, can't even tell if it's a guy or woman half the time. Stick a hat on pull up a hood and it could be the pope for all the good CCTV does. The wee junkie bums that are robbing don't even care if they get caught so doesn't deter them much either.
