My buddy tees off on 14th on Saturday and (for a change) it fliesd off straight down the middle - and does a pidgeon not come swooping across the fairway about 50ft up and ball and pidgeon 'collide'. Impact stops pidgeon in flight and it tumbles about for a a bit (must've been on ehell of a shock) then flies back to wherer it had come atg a much lowere altitude, Meanwhile ball had taken a wicked deflection off the pidgeon into the deep rough. Played provisional but original ball was not found.

Apart from having never seen this happen before what's the ruling? I guess it's rub of the green and tough. Seems equavalent to a shot hitting a spectator, deflecting and being lost. Though hitting the pidgeon was much funnier.

I once hit a 7 iron and as it reached its apex it split a group of swallows like the red arrows. they bombed left and right.

my jaw hit the floor. awesome viewing!

Queue a load of people getting upset about animal cruelty.

This could be a popcorn thread :D

All those elaborate schemes and all Dasterdly had to do was take up golf.

Pretty sure ruling is "hard luck for both of you".

ball moved by outside agency, replay with no penalty................i think:o

question in wrong section though, should be in rules:smirk:

Wasn't going to be a rules question but ended up one.

As far as the ruling. @Dareth - that was smy initial thought but what's the difference between this and ball hitting spectator and getting lost - after all when a ball hits a spectator you play it from wghere it finishes up. And if it finishes up lost then tough?

I've seen shots scatter birds but I've never seen a ball hit a single bird flying across line of play dead on - like clay pidgeon shooting. We didn;t go looking for the pidgeon... :(

good point, must be a difference between 'moved by outside agency' and 'deflected by outside agency' I'll need to look up the rules which I keep in my bag for such occasions....

P.S who's Dareth? is that me and Gareth morphed into one:rofl:

I had a similar situation on the 10th tee not long ago. Had a cracking round going on (by my standards) and was only 4 over gross for the front 9 with 23 stableford points. Absolutely nailed a drive on the 10th, dead straight and as it passed the ladies tee a seagull flew across. Ball and seagull came together with a spectacular explosion of feathers resulting in one dead seagull and my ball finishing in a gorse bush. A penalty drop and several hacks up to the green ended with me writing a 7 on the score card. That one birdie cost me a treble bogey and from that point on my round disintegrated. Only scored 6 points total on the back 9.

Think the distinction is ball at rest moved by outside agency (bird or spectator) V ball in motion deflected by outside agency with former allowed to replace near as you can & latter is tough wobbly bits
