Casual Water and relief

One of the holes on my local course has a 'crater' at the right side of the fairway which is steeply banked at the rear and rear sides. It holds an inch or so of water quite regularly.
A club-length drop from the edge of the water not nearer the hole results in the ball rolling back into water.
Is, therefore, the club length taken from the edge of the bank please?

Its my understanding with casual water, you have to take FULL relief. So if you take advantage of the ruling, you have to take a drop where there is no water, or scwelching (sp) under foot. If the ball rolls back into the water twice, then you get to place the ball, as in any other drop situation.

Just read your question again, and I think I misunderstood the first time of reading. Now if you take full relief, plus a club length, and you are still on the bank of this crator, I think thats where it should be played from. Another way around would be if your club had a local rule to say you can drop outside the crator, or get a drop zone marked up.

Rule 25-1 (page 99 of the rules of golf) states that through the green the ball must be dropped within one club length of the nearest point of relief. Therefore if your point of relief is on a slope you must drop the ball and if it either runs more than a club length or goes nearer the hole it must be placed at the point it landed in compliance with rule 20-3d (i). Basically drop it twice and if it runs away down the hill on the third time you can place

If the club has placed a local rule regarding the crater you must take relief under the guidance given in that local rule
