I was wondering what your views are on whether its better to carry your bag or use a trolley.

I am a year into my golfing life and so far carry my bag (under the impression its better for me from a fitness point of view). However am I suffering mentally (huffing and puffing around the course) rather then concentrating on the next shot....

Carry...

You can go directly to your ball all year round, you can climb through hedges and ditches to get to your ball, you get more exercise, it is way quieter (nice when playing golf to be out in the country away from all the noise), you can walk between the green and the bunkers, you don't feel the need to fill your bag with tat you won't use, you carry fewer tatty golf balls, you only need one golf bag (carry bags on trolleys look gay), you can get a lift to golf days with someone else without having to stack the boot like a jigsaw puzzle, you won't piss your mates off when you are ate because you forgot your battery, your battery won't go flat half way round leaving you stranded in the back of beyond, you won't strain your back getting a trolley out from the car boot, you won't have to assemble a mechano kit before you can play, your clubs won't drive off into a bunker or lake under their own steam, you don't get remote control bags which beep.... I could go on, but you probably get the message.

Carry?....you're off your trolley.

Now a trolley convert after 25 years of carrying. Just bought a new Powakaddy Twinline 3 push trolley and it's the biz. Folded, it's about the size of an iPod, so no issues in the car. Plus, you can carry several bags of wet cement around the course with you without feeling the strain.

I can store my entire years clothing (washed and unwashed) around with me and still have room for 25 clubs (including non-conforming drivers).

There's space for my camera, camcorder, laser rangefinder and as many foosty Mars Bars as a man can sensibly eat. Am trying to find a space for the plasma screen telly for when the round gets slow but I will find space somehow.

Still store my Ogio carry bag in the hall but just looking at it reminds me of marathon running.

In short....I was just getting knackered ny the 16th and didn't have the energy for a beer after my round. Go on. Be lazy. Treat yourself.

I'm with Murph. I trolleyed for few years (pulled and electric) but have seen the light and gone back to carrying beacuse there is too much palaver with a trolley having to walk round everything and cross tracks, ditches etc. You do end up carrying the earth with a trolley that you just don't need. As I have lightened the load to carry I found the exertion level to be about the same as trolleying. You may end up carrying more weight but you also walk a lot less distance with a carry bag. I've tried both ways and for now am enjoying carrying and enjoying space in the car and much less fuss and bother on arriving to play golf setting the bloody thing up.
ps Good players carry!

I carry as you walk less distance better for your fitness and you just need to walk in the clubhouse then in the lockeroom and put your shoes on and off you go.Much quicker than unfolding your trolley.

There is nothing that frustrates greenkeepers more than the over use of trolleys, especially in winter. Not just the smearing and the mess they make but the fact that they are filled with every conceivable item and then walked extremely close to the green and other important playing areas. Then to top it all, the very same person has the audacity to complain about the worn areas around the course.

Carry for your own health and the protection of your course. if you trolley lighten your load and be sympathetic to the course.

Haaaaaaa I feel better now!

Greenkeeper,

I suspect that you are exagerating!. There is nothing worse than those who don't repair their pitchmarks or the impressions they leave from the legs of their carry bags left right next to the green. Trolleys leave no impression if they were manufactured after plastic and intelligence were invented.

I feel better now, too.

I agree with murph's comments. Having switched between the electric trolley and carry bag a few times over the past 18 months I find my scores are better when carrying. More in that you can go directly to your ball, take your bag where trolley's can't go so you have the full club selection where as in the past I've been guilty of carrying a wedge and putter getting to my ball finding a wee 8 iron is the shot, and rather than walk back I'll play the wedge and not come away with the shot I should have made and I feel costs shots.

It depends a bit on how much you play. If I've got a 36 holer or am just feeling lazy I will use the trolley. More importantly, you can get packed up quicker at the end and into the bar before the others are finished folding up their trolleys :D

I think I will continue to carry. Some good points about accessibility and having full club selection available.

And besides, climbing over fences and through trees is much easier with a carry bag...

Brilliant thread! Prefer to carry as makes easier to find ball in rough etc but in winter prefer to trolley as like to take enough waterproofs and extra hats, gloves, sweaters to see me round. I hate that 'shall I take my waterproofs out dilemma'.

Carry.....(although buggies are good!)
Also, leave out unnecessary clubs.
It's hard work to start with but SO much faster. Don't think I ever lost to someone who had a trolley. Always lost to the lads with a tatty old bag, 8 clubs (usually including a 1 iron) and a putter from the 60s.
