I love the old carry on films, but saw yesterday they are going to remake a few of them!!!

They were a product of the time and should be left there IMO.

Not sure why anyone would think this is a good idea????

PS

Whats your Favorite?

Mine..... Carry on Screaming;)

Carry On Up the Khyber is one that I really liked but could watch any of them if it were on tonight

...Camping
...Doctor
...Dick

All spring to mind first

I cant think a PC remake of the theme will work well nowadays

Oh Matron

cant see it working myself, belonged in a specific era, the whole political correctness thang would take the edge right orf

Leave well alone

next thing they will be doing a remake of "Up Pompeii"

Carry on up the Khyber. Love them all though to be fair.

I agree that they should be left alone. It was the actors that made the films and you can't recreate them. They made an awful remake a few years ago and it was a shocker. Leave us with re-runs.

Went to see the remake of Dads Army. A good attempt, some funny moments but overall.......no.

Leave them be I say.

Is normally my position, however having been to the cinema last night I saw a trailer for a new western. The trailer itself looked really good, said to Mrs BiM we'll give that a run, the title only came at the end of the trailer; The Magnificent Seven……..

I know it's wrong but………..

BIM - How far into the film can you stop feeling uncomfortable and actually enjoy it though? They have to capture you so quickly before the drawbridge comes up. The music, the actors, the colour of the film used back then. All of it was so wonderful. I should be more open minded about it and look forward to it rather than dreading it I suppose.

If they are going to do it, they should throw political correctness out the window and do it properly. If not, there's no point.

x2

The original Carry On films wouldn't be allowed these days given their penchant for risque dialogue and innuendo, and veiled sexism.

Anyway, there's no current celebrity who could successfully reprise any of Sid James/Kenneth Williams/Charles Hawtrey/Bernard Bresslaw/Hattie Jacques and the rest.

They tried it once with Carry On Columbus, 15 years after the last, and it was god-awful crap.

Carry On Abroad is my particular favourite.

LT - if I remember correctly, the Mark Wahlberg version threw a couple of twists in fairly early to give that film its own identity, so whilst following it same basic premise it's more a homage to than a remake of the original; maybe that's why it worked for me.

I'll be honest and say that if the words The Magnificent Seven had come up at the front of the trailer, I'd probably have felt exactly the same as you; leave it alone, it's a classic. But by doing what they did, I followed the trailer, felt I'd like it and was then surprised to see what it was. I didn't bother with Dad's Army because I felt exactly the same as you did about this one and couldn't see how it could be improved upon. And I agree with your comments about the music, the actors, the colour of the film used back then; you just missed the triumph of good over evil and the young love story which completed the set of what made a perfect film.

I know exactly what you mean about being more open-minded; I'm normally exactly the same regarding musical cover versions, but one particular cover version has now displaced the original in my affections, an original which I previously thought couldn't be improved upon, which has made me think. Maybe I'm mellowing with age, but I'm definitely going to give the new version a fair chance. However good it might be, I very much doubt it will never completely replace the original in my affections, but then after the musical change of heart, who knows?

Incidentally, have you looked at the link? I love the choice of music; interestingly, another cover version of another classic…..

Being pedantic The Magnificent Seven is a remake...

Back to the OP...

Hopefully they don't bother and that's from possibly the only person that thought the Dad's Army remake was OK...

Megasteve - Good pedantry but at least The Magnificent Seven changed the continent, country and people. This version is going to be a western and so fundamentally the same.

BiM - I saw the trailer, had to wait for everyone in the office to leave, and was pleased to see it is not the same location, ie Mexican town, not trying to copy the same style of the Seven. The characters are not imitating Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen etc. Yes, they will have their own character but they are not looking to do a take off in the way Dad's Army was for example. Hopefully enough differences to make the film stand on its own. Some good points, Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt and the director who did The Equalizer. I started off grumpy, now I want to see it. Next I will be trying Sushi and green vegetables. Maybe being open minded could be a good thing.............
