" The Carnoustie Links Management Committee have announced that all golfers will have to use a mat when playing on the Championship Course between Sunday 10th June until 2nd July. The decision was made after consultation with the R&A and is mainly the result of poor growing conditions in the lead up to this year’s Championship.
“We would like to apologise for for having to introduce this at such short notice but is it the unfortunate consequence of poor growing conditions this spring†said Graeme Duncan, General Manager.
“We have been working closely with the R&A and together believe the use of mats is imperative if we are to protect the course ahead of the Open. We are aware the effect this has on Season Ticket Holders and we will be discussing how to address thisâ€
As compensation to visitors the Links Committee will offer a 50% reduction in their green fee between 10th June-2nd July. A full refund will be made to visitors who decide not to play during this period.The use of mats is obligatory whenever a golfer is playing from the fairway or 1st cut of rough."
