After 15 years in the security game I am moving onto a new career as a Tower Crane operator. The company I do security for and have done for 7 years has launched a new Lifting Technician Apprentice Scheme and I have been accepted onto it. We have one of the largest fleets of Tower & Crawler cranes in the UK.
I will be going on a 13 week residential training course at the National Constrution College in Norfolk and after that I will be fully qualified to operate 2 types of Tower Crane and a Crawler Crane. We have the largest luffing crane in Europe on our fleet and one of them is currently deployed at The Etihad stadium expansion job. I cannot wait to get my hands on some proper big boys toys.
I am very excited as you can tell but also a bit nervous of such a drastic career change.

Good luck mate

You've got more chance of catching me handing out UKIP flyers than you do of getting me up in one of them giant beasties...:D

Always wondered... what happens if you need a nature break in one of those things

Pee in a cup, not like anyone is going to see.

That is a bit of a change isn't it! Wow, i'd love to have a go. Used to have a remote controlled toy crane as a child. would often hook the dogs collar as he slept. Interestingly, I heard a fact when I was in Dubai a few years ago, that 90% of the worlds cranes were there. If its true, that is some stat. That would be an awesome place to apply your trade, and golf!

There are still plenty in the Middle East at the moment but no where near as many as a few years ago. A lot of our managers have been pulled back to work in the UK market.

Its a good thing to be in if you can handle the heights, a lot cant though :D

Good luck, hope it all goes well in the new career

My mate did this a few years ago after getting fed up with his city job , sitting in traffic on the way home from London , looked around at all the tower cranes and thought "i fancy that " . paid for the training himself and loves it . I have recently been trained to use a self erect crane at work and enjoy using that , but being remote controlled rather than in a cab you do loads of running about and left is only left when your back is to the crane ,so easy to slew the other way when you turn and face it .
On the right jobs you can get good bonus , working through breaks and overtime . If you don't work then many on the ground can't work , so they have to make it worth while for you . Good luck with it

Take your sticks with you when you do your course. Brancaster and Hunstanton are 2 lovely courses up that way. Great Yarmouth is also a fun track and you have Sheringham and Cromer as well which are both decent
