Looking for a few forum opinions. I am looking for a second hand car but what I want is saloon size with really good fuel efficiency and as decent as spec as possible. Looking to spend around the £10000.00 mark which is affordable when trading in my current car.current favourite is a Volvo S40 with the stop/start system which gives 76mpg and only £20 per year car tax

Seat Exeo 2.0 diesel? It's the Audi A4 from a couple of years ago so you know you are buying a quality vehicle but at a sensible price.

Skoda Octavia 1.6TDI Elegance saloon. You'll get one about 2 - 3 years old with all the gadgets, basically an A4 with a different shell on it.
Beware of quoted fuel efficiency, they are not based on stop starting, more on a good run.

I have a 2.0TDI Skoda Octavia Estate and average 57MPG, cheap insurance, tax and loads of room.

Well I don't think you will better that! For quality and reliability Volvo's are in the top 5 IMHO. They have fantastic engines that "roar", when you need that bit of extra power. Build quality is always good too.

Not so sure the "Echo" stop start is a benefit, when driving in town and heavy traffic, can be annoying! The good thing is, you can switch 'em off.

Whilst I agree, they are small and you'll struggle to get golf clubs in the boot without faffing around taking your woods out etc.

Greg, take a look at the Titanium/Titanium X Mondeos..Should be able to find one a few years old at that price...Has all the toys you would want (DAB stereo, parking sensors, dual climate, electric mirrors and with the X you get a few extras like heated/cooled seats etc..)..Only thing you don't get is FULL electric seats...But I don't find it an issue at all.

It has all the space you'll ever need and isn't bad economy -wise either. When mine gives up the ghost, I'm getting another.

Skoda Superb. I don't think the fuel with be as good as the Volvo but its an Audi A6 in disguise and the room in the car is incredible.

Thanks for all the comments, the Mondeo at Skoda Superb are both on the list to have a look at. I did have a go in a Volvo S40 at the weekend and was suitably impressed. Not going to set the world alight with acceleration etc but that is not what I am looking for, I have done that and it really is not necessary in a car that basically gets me up and down the A52 to work. Have to say that the £20 per annum car tax on the Volvo is also very attractive.

Need to get out next week to look at and try some other options.

Left field choice from the other side of the brain - Merc E55 AKG - circa 54 plate - in budget (outlay wise) and keeps the lower tax(£270 - unlike mine below :(). OK - so it might cost a teeny bit more to run initily but you will have a bigger smile on your face when you get to work, and thus work harder, earn more money and, therefore, in the medium term will actually save you money!!:D. I set a new best on the way back from Hayling yesterday - 23.4mpg - 8 more than the last tank!!:)

the Mrs has just signed on the line this very afternoon for the V40 to replace her Ford Focus - Volvo doing a stonking £299 p/m 36month lease (includes servicing) on the D2 R-Design. We test drove today and was v impressed. Read a lot of reviews on the V40 and many said it was a stand up rival to Audi A3, BMW 1 series and Merc A Class - less marque cache but styling, performance, economy, safety and spec to match, if not beat the oppo...having driven 3 x A3s in the past I would agree.
ps I am not on a commission from Volvo!

..and will cost the same again everytime it needs a repair, merc parts are extortionate!

Volvo sounds ideal and £20 road tax:eek: my last car (now traded) was £400 road tax, might as well sit in traffic jams burning £20 notes

Also heard that it costs £500 for a replacement set of keys but you do get a free set of irons with that ;)

My local MB wanted £275 for a replacement key. Also got a quote for replacing just the spark plugs. Not much change from £800.

Gave them one of these but the middle one.
