I'm thinking of changing my other half's car, she has a Toyota IQ which is too small now the grand children are growing bigger. I'm looking to spend about £10k and wondering whether to go diesel, petrol, hybrid or all electric on a small/medium motor

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Herself went the mini-MPV route... Hyundai IX20 to be exact... She's still happy with her choice... Went with diesel as one of the grandkids is 100[ish] miles away and regular collections/returns are to be done... Otherwise it would've been petrol for more local usage..

If you go Diesel go for one with 'blue' tech it chemically alters what comes out of the exhaust and keeps road Tax down but if you do go diesel remember to take it on 20 minute to half hour run fairly often to clear/ burn off the particulates, to protect the particulate filter.

I only do 6-8k a year but reckon the savings in running costs make it worth it but I do run a 2 litre car.

You cant go wrong with a Ford Focus Chris - 1.25 Ecoboost unleaded - less road tax and for short runs petrol is better than diesel.

Good luck with your search mate.

I recently got HID a Renault captur, it's a little mob aimed at the Vauxhall mills / ford kuga. We do a lot with the Neices and nephews at the back takes two booster seat and a full kiddies seat no issues. It's a little 900cc petrol with small turbo - great little car.

Look around for some pre reg deals, her spec was 19k OTR and we got a pre reg with 70 miles for 12.5k, but hers is the top of the range spec.

The only fault I can find is the rear seatbelt tap on the plastic inner wheel door panels when not clicked in, which can get very irritating. This is easily solved but fastening then when not in use.

I had the 1 litre eco boost, was great until one of the gaskets on the cooling system to the turbo went.
Luckily was under warranty (just) but got shot once it was repaired.

Back to Honda now

I'm quite pleased with my 3 year old Hyundai i40 CRDI, road tax £190. A big car with big boot and decent milage, cost me £10,000 a year ago.

I have a Cee'd 1.6 diesel with their ecodynamics engine which was 89bhp and 50mpg when pottering about. Recently had it remapped to 137bhp and it now gets 56.5mpg and is far more torquey.
Great car, very comfortable, very quiet and highly recommended.
Also look at Hyundai's ix20, i30 and ix30 .............. all with the same 1.6 diesel that's in the Kia Cee'd.
