The boss has given me the option of Audi A6 2.0 TDI, A5 2.0 TDI or a BMW 520d. All either saloon or estate.

The A6 saloon will be my 3rd one on the trot but should I go for an estate. I like the look of the A5 from the outside but its just a smaller A6 on the inside - currently in 3rd place. Never had a BMW before. The saloon looks nice but BM's are rear wheel drive...mmm, choices, choices.:mmm:

Any thoughts?

Does it get much snow and ice near you in the Winter months? Are your roads well gritted?

Forget the BMW if it get's iced and grit is in short supply - they are the Ultimate Driving Machines - apart from in ice!

Shame you can't have the A5 coupe. That's what the missus is having next year. As you know the A6 is. Nice place to be inside. I find BMW are just to plain on the interior for me. Passat cc is a lovely overlooked motor too. That's probably on the list if you fancied a change for something less common on the roads.

The CC is on the list and I can have extra goodies if I drop down but I'm after a big boot...

I would go for the BMW - just had a mid life revision so try and get the revised one, although it wasn't a big change. Not a lot between them but would put the A5 at the bottom as that is on its last legs model wise.

A6 all the way, I actually stopped my test drive of the Beemer and had to say to the salesman that it was boring and dull (did it in a nicer way of course). Stopped the A6 test drive short as well, just to tell the salesman he had a deal:whoo: great cars and I can fit more golf stuff in that boot than I could in my 4x4 Jeep:eek:

Although - the 3 series is a newer and better car and nearly as big - and on the same budget you may get the 325D

I would go for the Beemer every time, I've had 2 and also 2 Audi's. The BM's have been faultless, the Audi's nothing but trouble.

Can you get a bigger engine? 2L engines are bit gut less arnt they? Ive been an Audi owner for years until recently and the 3L Tdi Audis are much better and in the winter as you know the Quattro is outstanding..... My mate has just had his brand new saloon A6 turn up and its lovely, looks far more classy and better presence than a beamer imo! ;) Better interiors as well and v solid. However..... as the man above says the new 3 series is nice looking car and you might be able to get a bigger lump to keep the smile alive!!

As someone has previously said if you get a lot of snow/ice stay away from the beemer as they are rear wheel drive. Someone also mentioned the Skoda VRS which is an absolute beast for a fraction of the price. If you were going for an Audi though would go for the A6 S-line Estate.

Is this a true company car?? if so all i would look at is the emissions. if you can get the 520D BMW in the efficient dynamics model, get that one. in honesty all of the mid size german wagons are much of a much.

The tax you pay is all down to emissions, when i was in proper co cars, i chose a 320D ED that had 10K of extras, so was about £34k P11D value, my monthly cost was under £120 in tax, all down to the low emissions.

And the calls of "go for a bigger engine" are kind of valid ish, i really wouldnt worry. i went from a tuned 330D (approx 300BHP, 600NM Torque) to a 320D ED and it honestly did not bother me, yes it was a bit more sluggish etc, but 950 miles from a tank of fuel and naff all tax outweighs 0-60 times IMHO. (PS i think i am getting old!!)

Bigger engine than a modern 2.0TDi is a bit of a waste. Look at the BM lumps for example. I owned a 2006 320CD (first of the E92 models) and the 2.0 TD engine was 160BHP with a CO2 ouput of 153gm/K meaning it was in VED band G.
Fast forward to 2013 and the new generation of 2.0TD lumps are 185BHP with 125gm/K putting them in VED band C.

185BHP is more than enough in modern times while still returning a combined 60mpg.

I would, personally, go for the BM, I find FWD cars very boring. BM is a bit of icy conditions will keep you on your toes.

Last winter my BM in icy conditions kept me at home! i actually could not get it of my 1% incline driveway! LOL to be fair, the newer ones are better and i did have stupidly wide summer tyres...

And to follow on from Greig, found this on the 520 ED:

It's the lowest-CO2, and therefore lowest-tax, large saloon on the market – and it has a 184bhp, 280lb ft engine. The magic fiscal figure is 119g/km, the sort of CO2 figure usually scored only by superminis. And this is a BMW 5-series we're talking about.

How does it compare?

For economy, nothing in the class comes close; next-most frugal is the Audi A6 2.0 TDI with 129g/km, the same score as a non-ED 520d. There's little doubt that the 520d Efficient Dynamics will be the biggest-selling 5-series of all, especially as its £30,435 selling price is just a bearable grand or so above the regular 520d SE.
