Well I have been playing golf for a reasonable amount of time now and am comfortable with my current swing and grip. My problem is I hit my shots severely left to right. The ball ends up bouncing at a right angle to where I am aiming. Apart from reducing the length of my shots it also makes it near impossible to hit greens/fairways.

Is there any tips to try and reduce the slice on my shots? I assume it can be a collection of different things but any common mistakes please post.

Mikka,

A practive drill here for you that may help to prevent your problem.

Basically place your ball on the range mat, then take one of the big rubber tees and place it 3" behind the ball and 2" away from you. Concentrate on hitting the ball without hitting the tee. Basically, if the ball flies and the tee is missed you will have stopped cutting the ball.

I had this problem before and rectified it with this drill. It creates a different swing, it feels almost as if you are swinging the club around you heels on the backswing.

I ended up hitting clean, straight iron shots and gained another 10 yards.

Hope this helps, Jon.

Mikka,

I'd advise that you pay as much attention as possible to your alignment. If you are aiming left, the path of your swing will automatically force you to cut across the ball causing a slice. In my experience this is by far the most common reason behind a slice.

I hope this helps, Neil

Neil, that sounds familiar. any ideas on how to sort alignment on the tee? I can (sort of) sort it on the range but laying down clubs on the tee doesn't quite seem the thing to do.

Hi mikka23

I have tried loads of drills etc but have never worked the best thing is to get lessons from a pro thata what i done the slice comes back now and again but its never as bad as before.

I agree, go to your local pro and for £15 or so he will be able to help you much more in 1/2 an hour that any amount of posts on here.

Do I get a medal for 100 posts?

This is a problem i suffer with too.
after taking lessons i now know that my problem is coming over the top.my swing path is OUT to IN.when i started playing 4 months ago i thought i was leaving the club face open resulting in the slice but its not.
without lessons i wouldnt know how to correct this so my advice as others have said is take some lessons.its improved my game 100%.im still not that good but at least i can enjoy the game with far more good shots than before lessons.

You have two choices....

1) go for lessons

or 2) learn that even a beginners or "not very good" swing can be trained to work better (straighter); but you'd need to get into the mechanics and learn some drills to get you approaching the ball from the right direction....easier said than done.

It's not that hard, but also a swing with bad flaws will be hard to groove, even with drills that cure the slice.
