Ok, I've finally concluded that I simply just can't practice!

I posted a while back saying how awful I was at the range but ok on course.
Well I've had some time away with work and been great abroad on the course, then on my first practice session tonight it's the same old story with a disastrous swing.

Definitely not going back there. No matter where I go to practice I'm awful.

I guess this means I'm not going to improve if I don't practice?

Anybody else similar to this? It's so demoralising.

Yes Homer, my practice is planned and it's working on a change so I really need it at the moment.
I have no confidence issues or nerves, I don't know what it is, I just play like a first-timer when I get on any range.

Will take a look at that though thanks, but I'm not sure it's too different from what I'm already thinking.

best practice is play 9 holes. hit two drives, a couple approach shots. pick up and hit a few chips then move on. putting can be done later at the practice green.

obviously you need it to be a bit quiet to do this but this is my favourite form of practice. standing pounding balls at the range is fun for a while but nothing beats course practice.

I'm similar to this im woeful when I'm practicing normally trying to work on something, literally all over the place.

Nowhere re near as bad on the course. I'd rather be bad in practice and better on the course rather than the other way round.

Unfortunately I am the other way round, I hit it much better on the range than I can on the course (mostly not committing fully to the shot when I have a score on the line)

Its a head/mind issue for me & not sure how I'll get past it

I'm glad someone else is like this as I was beginning to think it was just me.
I haven't spoken to anybody who is the same as me.

The problem is I really want to improve and surely practice is the only way to do that, but if I can't then what can I do?
I guess I'll just have to wait for the summer and just play all the time and have my 'practice' on the course.

Problem at the moment is I'm taking my bad practice to the course and whereas it's not as bad as the range, it's still not great.

I've never hit it well at the range, to the point where I don't bother going now. If I want to practice I'll head out onto the course of an evening and hit a few balls or use our short game area.

I am similar to you guys who can hit well at the range but poor on the course. I'm off 24 only really been playing for a full year. I can hit a long ball but it's the consistency. I know not everything is about hitting the longest drive and that but I can go to the range hit 100 balls with different clubs and will only have 4-8 bad shots on average.

get me on the course and let's say I go round in 100 shots I can bet 10-15 of them will of been bad shots. I can only put it down to putting pressure on yourself and confidence. Some of the shots I have duffed will be a simple 80ft chip with a full SW which I'm normally comfortable with but then the jitters set in and I convince myself to duff it. It's so frustrating as I know I can do better but never have. So I do feel for you guys who are in the same boat as me.

Had two years of not practicing at all apart from chipping in the garden. In that time if i went on a range or even grass practice ground i would just hit a load of shermans, so steered clear.

If your not working on swing changes then just get on the course or do some short game/putting practice. That would be more than enough.

Im working on swing changes at the min and its an absolute pain in practice, but really need to hit balls and try to make the change become natural or else I would just play rounds.

The only time I go to the range is to hit balls with my 7yr old son, which is great.
But I find it boring & really don't get anything from it if I go on my own to practice.
