Can't hit my hybrid, is a 3 iron the answer?

I have a Cleveland Mashie hybrid and I just cannot get on with it. I think it's entirely pschological because I used to be able to nail it. It just feels to light to me.

I'm thinking of buying the 3 iron that goes with my set of irons, I hit my 4-iron well, but then don't really get on with anything between that and my driver, so could do with something a little extra off the tee for tight par 4's or long par 3's. I don't tend to use anything longer than a 5 iron off the fairway, a lack of distance doesn't cost me shots, it's my short game and my tee shots.

However, looking at signatures, I can't see many 3 irons! Is it a mistake to get one? Just stick with the hybrid and practice, practice, practice?

Got any tips for shaking my hybrid issues?

Try a different hybrid!

The fact that you previously hit it well indicates something has changed - and it almost certainly isn't the club!

What is actually going wrong with it - and what loft is it?

I made the change back after trying to use a hybrid (everyone telling me they are so easy to hit) and getting fed up with the outcome.

Lots of people swear by them so I recognise it is me that is the issue but much happier and more confident with the 3 iron so its back in the bag.

I dont want to hijack the thread but was wondering if its to do with my height and the fact that I have my irons extended by nearly 2 inches. I hit driver well - struggle a bit with 3w and 5w and cant hit hybrids. Recently I have been widening my stance more on my 3 & 5 woods and trying to keep lower to the ground during the swing and getting better contact - not perfect but better. So is it the length of the shaft lengths that dont suit me ?? Much harder to extend a graphite shaft and get the right flex etc (or so I am told)

It's 20.5 degrees, and I hit duck hooks or regular hooks.

It's odd because I have been taking lessons for the last few months and really improving my ball striking, but this doesn’t seem to extend to my hybrid.

I think I will get the 3-iron as a short term solution (it should be pretty cheap) and simultaneously have a lesson on my hybrid and give it some serious practice.

Quite possibly the (59gm C-Kua) shaft could be a bit light. Gread for head speed, but tends to be 'left-oriented'!

That's certainly what I found - and have actually harnessed - with my 4-hybrid which has a 65gm shaft compared to 85 or 90 that seems to suit me for 'straight'.

I, personally, have never understood the love in with hybids, even though I carry one.

From memory, the shaft in the Mashie is bonkers light. Perhaps your swing is suited to a heavier shaft?

Having said that, if you used to "nail it" and now you struggle with the same club would suggest something has changed in your swing.

Have you made any changes to your swing, swing speed, tempo, ball position etc?

I know when I have the ball to far back I hit some huge hooks.

I've always struggled with hybrids too, almost as much as my everlasting putting woes. I've tried any amount of hybrids and never settled on one I could hit solidly. The Ping Rapture V2 was the closest. Tried a lot of Adams hybrids, which are highly regarded but they were the worst of the lot for me and my mediocre swing. What about considering a fairway wood? I've got an old 18 degree 5 wood in the bag which I love, easy to hit, soaring trajectory and also good out of the rough!

I tried a hybrid for a while but have recently purchased the 5 wood to compliment my driver and 3 wood.

I,m now after the 7 wood to complete the set.

TM R580 7 wood if anypone knows of one for sale!!!!!!

I must say I know very little about the mechanics of a shaft and the impact that weight / MOI / kick point etc has.

Also, I say I used to be able to nail it, that was very shortlived!

As I said earlier, I think it’s somehow psychological – but I’m finding it very hard to kick the mental difficulty I have with the club notwithstanding that my ball striking has come on leaps and bounds. I’m pretty solid with my 4-iron for example, where I used to get the same kind of ball flight I have with my hybrid. Clearly I must be swinging each club differently, but I’m not meaning to!

I've tried other people’s hybrids too and never really got on with them – I’d really love to crack it though, having a go to long club off the deck would be fantastic!

..and I know absolutely b****r all about the mechanics of shafts. All I know is that I've just about given up with my Cleveland Burner hybrid if unless I want to shape the ball. Started using my 3i much more regularly to get a more consistent, generally straight and pentrating flight. I do snap hooks sooo easily off the tee with my hybrid. If I want to float a high fade in - yup can do that. If I want to put in a low draw - yup can do that. Hit the bleedin' thing straight? Forget it.
